Thanks for the information! I called him (nice guy), offered him $6000 and he declined.

Re: Iron Heads
Couple years ago I called and priced bare ex-514 heads and with no valves or valve job they were $3500 a pair, with ports cleaned up and a basic 45* valve job they were $4500 a pair(still no valves). so by the time you have a complete port and polish job done, competition valve job, new valves and at that size titanium would be a good idea, a new intake, and rocker girdles I dont think $6000 would touch a setup. This is the reason we are seeing fewer and fewer fords in the iron headed classes around here

Re: Iron Heads
IMO,the iron head rule is a JOKE anyway The truck pulling rule makers have taken the little guy out of the competition in those classes. jmo

Re: Iron Heads
When it was a factory iron head rule fords would dominate alot of the time so the rulemaker chevy guys had to give themselves a chance and allow aftermarket iron. Iron CJ's can be very competitive but have their limits.

Re: Iron Heads
If you buy a set of EX514's,better make sure you can find someone WILLING too wrestle them around and do the job correct, and also make sure that if they are the ones from the last batch, that they have the water passage issue fixed. I hear that T.Bishoff has a couple of new sets, but won't sell OR port them unless he built or builds your engine. Another rumor from a reliable source told me just today that a new style (revamed)SCJ iron head is in the final stages of design and could possibly be on the market shortly.Said the proto type has flowed in the High 400 range on intake. he said he has some literature on it,but did'nt personally see it.

no at one time they were 3500,but then they changed their mind and only sold them c n ced for 4500.00 which is a good price for this head, the cutters are very pricy to mach these heads, and you go thru a few of them, then hand work them a little more, and you have a very good head, i just sold a pair bare for 5250.00
the iron head rule is out dated,it was to keep the price down, and now look what happened?

The problem is the rules need to be expanded to say "Factory Production Iron Heads Only"BOSS 429 wrote:138 wrote:6000+ for an intake and iron heads?... what a joke. talk about making it tuff on a ford guy. that's ridiculous.

Heard the same thing

I have heard the same thing (will kill the value of any old iron head). I think our pulling group has dug a hole that will take for ever to fix. I don't know all of the history behind what has happened since I have only been pulling with them for a couple of years. Rumor has it that our 6200 lb "altered steet" began as a "budget class" to allow the less fortunate with an option to pull. They split a 6300 lb modified class and created the 6200 lb altered street class. The 6300 modified class is still restricted to an iron head and the rules for this class specifically stated that an EX514 head was not allowed until last year. This class only has four trucks that compete for points: two all chevy trucks, one ford with a chevy motor and one dodge. No pure breed fords!
I think the original version of the 6200 lb rules only stated "iron heads". The first season a chevy won the points (not sure what heads he was running). Ironically during the second season it was a ford that benefited from the way the rules were written and he won nearly every pull and the points with BT iron heads. A ford has not won a single pull in this class since he stepped down. This gave the chevy guys an excuse to go out and buy mostly the RHS head since "the ford ran an aftermarket head that one year".
As I did my research and started building my truck my plan was to go with either the BT or EX514 head. I couldn't find any BT heads so I started talking to some of the other guys in the group about the EX514 heads. I was told that "that head will not be allowed" in the 6200 lb class. I approached the rules commitee with the idea and they said no way. They said that the EX514 was a far more superior cylinder head than any available iron head on the market for the chevy .
It's the same old story all over the country in truck pulling and some mud bogging groups. Iron head rules kill the fords and nobody wants to switch to aluminum because they "have too much money in their iron heads" and it will create an unfair advantage for the fords if they run aluminum and the chevys are stuck running iron or have to cut their losses and go with aluminum. The 6200 lb and the 6300 lb classes do not have a ford rep on the rules committee because.................well there are no fords in the 6300 class and very few in the 6200 lb class! I could sell my truck and go buy those EX514 heads for $8500, but then I wouldn't have a truck to put them in
Atleast we havea place like this to vent frustration!

X2 Dave I agree 100%. Especially in the Mod. STREET classes. It would at least let the little guy have a fair chance. I know that the rules are different in different areas, but imo the street classes should NOT be allowed to have weight hanging off the front of the truck.Leave that for the S/S and open classes.JMO
