help....79 400 bellhousing NP435 behind a 1992 460.
I'm sorry, but I can't get my head around around what I need to do to make this work. I have been looking into this for 3+ weeks, and I am reluctantly about to give up and just run the C6 auto
(a bit of background: I picked up a 92 F350 w/ 460BBF and C6 and D60hp/10.25 with intentions of running the axles with a 302 powering the whole deal since it has been done, and is an easy swap. Maybe unfortunatley, but certainly a fact; I fell in love with the 460 (despite the auto) and decided I wanted to put it in my TJ (Jeep wrangler) with the NP435/205/400 bellhousing)
I think I understand the following:
1) The 1992 460 is externally balanced, so I need to look for a weight on the flywheel I choose.
2) The 400 bellhousing (out of a 79 bronco) is 3/8 shorter than the 429/460.
What I don't understand:
1) If the stock clutch/flywheel/pressure plate is available from the same guy I got my trans out of (from a 79 400 block), can I get the flywheel balanced & redrilled for my engine (externally balanced 1992 460)?
2) Where do I need to look for a starter? 400 bronco or 460 bigblock? I understand that the starter from the (auto) C6 will not work with a flywheel?
3) What clutch fork/throwout bearing do I need to run? I have the bearing/fork with the 400 bellhouse... will that work? I think I can figure out the slave cylinder once I get the clutch fork figured out.
4) can anyone explain how externally balanced engines are in fact balanced? Does each engine need it's own specific weight on the flywheel, or is an external flywheel one size fits all if you have the right engine?
Sorry for only questions.
If I get the NP435 to work with my 460, anyone local to Ohio is welcome to my C6 if that helps

Re: help....79 400 bellhousing NP435 behind a 1992 460.
What does the arrow mean?
Anyways, I wound up getting the L&L 460/400 balanced flywheel/clutch/pressure plate combo. After speaking with the salesguy (Al) and seeing several people suggest them *straight from the hip*, I jumped on that bandwagon.
All the flywheel hardware was included (the bearing which goes into the crank), the bolts for the flywheel to the crank, the pressure plate to the flywheel... and I will be running the bronco throwout bearing. so basically, all the transmission stuff is to a 79 bronco/400, the engine stuff (and starter) are from my C6/460. I ended up needing to make sure I went with the bronco block plate opened up for the 460, but I will be comparing that to the one which came with my C6/460.
Some more work to come.
Project update:
Pulled the engine, separated the C6 from it, and started cleaning the block up, ready for some ford blue paint. I will be going through the wiring harness to strip it down to just the necessary engine wiring stuff/computer...
Pulled the valve covers and evrything looks well cared for except for finding a few "strips of metal" for lack of a better word near the oil drains in the drivers side head... upon closer inspection, it looks like it was part of the breather tube attached to the oil filler neck... I also found one in the pan which had probably fallen through the passage.... too big to do damage, and too small to really worry about.
One question, when I pulled the oil pan, I noticed enough slop in the pairs of rods to make a clicking noise when I push on them. Is that normal? Is there a tolerance I can check for with my dial indicator? The rods seem to have little to no play on the axis they rotate, just a little front to back play....
Thanks!
Mark
P.s. will any 429 oil pan fit my 460? One of my buddies has an oil pan out of his foxbody/429 car he used to own and offered to give it to me, but it involves an hour drive for us to get it....

Is that why I can't find the 460 to jeep motor mounts at autozone? Lol.
Thanks for the comeback.

You will have to fab the motor mounts

You're kidding right?
(not sure if I am towing the line in being sarcastic or joking, but it's supposed to come over joking)
I'm planning on using the same style motor mounts I used when I adapted the 6-cylinder frame to my (now deceased) 4 cylinder engine... 2" x 1/4" wall DOM tube cut to the corresponding length using urethane (leaf spring) bushings to isolate the motor similar to what autofab offers.... http://www.autofab.com/motor_mounts.htm I had used this style mount before I even knew what a 460 was
Here are a few pictures of my TJ build in case if helps anyone take me a bit more seriously.
Here are my 4 cylinder mounts... as described above, 1/4" wall 2" DOM I had to cut these to get the motor off of the transmission, so I learned to make the frame side removable as well as the motor side instead of being forced to pull both the motor and trans.
Here is my TJ before I put the tub back on... I think the upper control arms weren't in yet, or had been pulled for some trimming) :
These two are my biggest fans (and Heroes to me):
When my TJ finally made it home with the 4cylinder/Dana 30 front/Ford 8.8 rear...
Wheeling
Puling the 2.5 jeep motor
Pulling the 460/C6/Dana 60/10.25
Anyways, more pictures to come, I've been busy with weddings on the weekends (i'm a wedding photographer) and my day job during the week. As it sits, I have my L&L clutch/flywheel/pressureplate and my 460 is stripped down to valve covers, heads, long block and oil pan and front pulleys, and intake. I am cleaning the block ready for paint and to install my NP435.
Hope you enjoyed the pics

I dont thank the engine is high enough in the next to last pic, and you will have to extend the drive shaft, but it should cool good up in all that clean air.
and you will still have to fab the mounts to make that work.
