Winter Rebuild.
I, like most here, have the BBF bug. I've got a fresh 466 with a nicely ported set of A429's, but a tiny cam. It runs good, but I know there is a lot left to be had.
I'm thinking about a set of H beams, a decent forged piston, and as much roller cam as it could handle.
I "think" I want it to run to about 7500. Or as much rpm as I could run safely. Studed 2 bolt block.
11.5/1. Heads flowed 330@.600 and 199@.600 but only on a 4" bore adapter. I'm curious to know what they would flow on a 4.39 but anyway. Its a mud drag deal. I want the rpm for tire speed. I know I could run a faster gear.
2 Questions
1)How much hp could I be looking at
2)How safe is 7500 on a stock, cast 3.85, and 2 bolt block
Give me your thoughts.

Re: Winter Rebuild.
What kind of rules are you held to?
I would think those heads would capable of upper 300's flow. I can't remember exactly, but 385cfm or so isn't out of the question with these heads and should be capable of close to 800hp if done correctly.
The crank if it's an internal balance crank, that is properly balanced should be OK to 7500rpm, but that 2 bolt block is gonna be a little iffy. A good set of splayed 4 bolt caps would be some nice piece of mind.

The only rules I may run into is race gas. Half the places I go don't allow it. I'm really only looking to make 700hp.(For now) If I could get there with 11.5 and pump gas I'd be happy. How wild would the cam have to be, to make 700 at only 477ci? I'm like you, might as well have a set of splayed caps fitted.

I think I would like to run a 6.7 or 6.8 rod with 2.2 journals. Maybe have a crank offset ground to something that matches an off the shelf stroker piston. How would a cast 3.59 ground to around 3.85ish hold up at 7500 and 700hp? How about a 3.85 ground to around 4.00? I guess ideal would be to find a forged 429 crank, cheap.

I think if you are going to go to the trouble of offset grinding a crank, and no cube rules, I'd just go ahead and buy a good Scat forged crank from Adney or Lem and start a whole build. No sense offset grinding to an oddball piston. I would think you could get close to the desired goal with a 545 ci or so and 93 octane pump gas. It will take the cubes to make the power probably as you aren't able to get it with compression. I'd definately have those heads flow tested again with proper equipment. The more info you have, the easier it would be to get a proper camshaft ground for it.

I know as time gets closer I'm going to actually make some decisions. I'm thinking a 14to1 deal on good gas isn't out of the question. But I haven't decided yet.
I know in the back of my head a stroker kit from scat or whoever is probably the best deal, but something appeals to me about the stock crank oddball combo.

Re: Winter Rebuild.
I run a stock crank offset ground to 4 inch stroke and it runs great it is in the proven build section as 495 iron head build I wasn't looking at running this on the street ever so i went with alot more compression. The stock block and stock crank can make alot of power if tuned properly if not its like anything else it will come apart

Re: Winter Rebuild.
I'd try to stay with the 4,14/4.15" stock offset ground stuff from Adney then. Common parts availability, and shelf pistons. The stock cranks are as good as stock cranks get, but there is always a place where something better is needed, and if you have any desire to go to a higher power level then maybe you should look at a forged crank now and only build the short block once.

I've got just what you need 429 steel crank offset ground ,6.7 Crower Billet rods,.030 Venolia Dome pistons, new Race Bearings, and Ring set. Makes 472 CI. This setup is freshly Balanced and ready to go in your Fresh Honed Block. $1500 NO LESS

Re: Winter Rebuild.
The thing that stick out to me is you mention rules not allowing you to run race gas, so if thats the case, you need to stay away from that 14:1 you are also looking at. Keep the compression down to no more than 11:1 on say a 521 kit and be happy. With the right cam and engine tune, you should be close to that magical 700hp mark.

Re: Winter Rebuild.
Heads are going to have to be top notch w/really good valves and the whole combo in order for pump gas under 500" and spinning the crap out of it for 7 to 750. It can very well be done though

Rick,
Not to hijack but how big are the domes on those pistons? (cc's) I'm assuming they are 4.42 bore? And the crank is offset ground to 3.85? Sounds like something one of my truck pulling friends could really use. Just a thought.

Yea, They are .030 w/.400 dome. I used them on Alum. CJ's and DoveC's and they worked really well.
