Disappointed Dyno Results
Dave Bamber built C460 headed 598, Gary Sellin tuned and dynamometer. I’m a little disappointed in the results, looking for advice. 1040 HP @ 6900; 825 ft. lbs. @5600. Ron’s terminator injected on methanol. I suspect the camshaft is the culprit. Isky # 311800, WW 1.8 rockers give it a number like this.
.824 .824 .288 .304 @ .050
Gary Sellin thinks the throttle body is too small, (2100 cfm)
Looking for recommendations

What is the injection tuneup?
My a head 598 made 1069 at 6800 and 920
9 ft lbs @ 5700

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
What is the LSA on the cam?
What size pump and what is the GPM @ 4000 on it?
What size nozzles?
What size pill?
Any bypass?
How much timing?
The throttle body is larger than any single 4bbl you could put on it. Sooooooooooooooo, unless he thinks a carb would really put it down on power, he should look somewhere else.
The cam sucks

I think you should be happy with these results. My 604 C head deal was 1030 and 850 on VP C113. Unless the C heads have down nozzles for the injection, you aren't going to see much better than this for power. The alcohol takes up a lot of available airspace in the runners and as such chokes the ports down.

I think a bypass and a little tuning will be a fun ride.

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
what kind of camshaft are you using, and yes it has a high speed bypass
Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
It's one of those wacky swap cams that aint worth a shit. My own specs, but I'm not near as smart as a couple of the guys on here. You will probably experience some poping if your running 1/4 mile, but may not be a problem on the 1/8 unless your geared for that only.

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
Heck my garage built 545 Bluethunder headed moter wet 7.58. Kind of a let down to spend this kind of jack and get thes results.
Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
Yeah, once you get above 800hp, horsepower per cubic dollar really goes up, naturally aspirated. With some tuning, you're right in the ballpark for where you should be. Don't listen to you lying BBC friends. The power will show on your time slip.

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
the dyno is a good tuneing tool
dont get to involved in numbers
my 528 Ahead deal only made 786@7400
i was thinki9ng it would make 950+ considering they are c&c ported
and this top end on a 530 made well over 950hp
but it works awsome at the track and thats were it counts

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
Absolutely right Jesse. Engine Masters are the only ones that compete on dynos.

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
That dyno that you used is pretty tight on the hp numbers. You could probly gain 75 horse by going to a "happier" dyno. Be a good idea to go to the track before spending more money and see what the engine "wants" in this configuration.

I think you'll be pleasantly suprised when you get it on the track. If you're looking for mid 6's, you will have to use juice anyway.

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
i know a guy around here with a bbc
it is a good solid motor he runs good with it
he took it a a dyno around here and i have been on that dyno myself
it isnt happy lol
well he wasnt happy with the numbers
so he took it to another dyno 2nrs away still wasnt happy with the numbers
so he took it to a 3rd dyno and he finally got the numbers he thought the motor
should run lol and his motor runs the same as it did from day 1
but i guess he feels better

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
What ever the issue is I doubt that the cam is all of it. The specs of the cam are not that far off of what I've seen work well. 115* lsa would have been better i.m.o. with the 288*/304* duration.
A good set of C460 heads would like more lift.

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
I know nothing of C-head cams, but I can say a little something about the tuneup with Terminator.
I also run 39 nozzles with a #1 pump. It should like somewhere around a 110 pill WITH the high speed bypass set correctly. My pill size has ranged from a 116 in bad air to a 110 in good air.
The high speed is the key. As shipped from Ron's it is way off. It has something like a 70 pill it with an opening of only 60 psi. Change the pill to a 40 (had to order one that small) and up the pressure on it to 85 psi (almost as high as it will go w/o adding extra shims). What I think is happening is the system is "running on the bypass" On the dyno mine was making the best power with around a 86-88 pill with the bypass as sent from Ron's. With the big #1 pump it was opening too soon and hurting the pressure at the nozzles. Changed the bypass so it was not dumping the pressure and then upped the pill size to control the amount of fuel.
Once it got the bypass correct in the car it really woke up. At 2800 lbs in the 1/8, I started out the first time out with a 5.55 @ 125. Last time out it went 5.24 @ 133. Over 3 tenths and 8 mph. I did change converters, but also kept tweaking the injection. A big part of the ET reduction was in the correct converter, but I think the majority of the mph increase was in the fuel tuneup.

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
True. Run a pressure gage with a tattle tale off of one of the injector lines or in the barrel valve block if it has one. If you run it in line, it will read the spike when you lift and won't be usable.

Re: Disappointed Dyno Results
I didn't notice any "bad results" (tune or mechanical damage) included in your post and unless your competing in NHRA Competition Eliminator, what the fuck is another 50 horsepower gonna provide? Sounds like you have a nice combo that makes alot of grunt at a reasonable engine speed, put it to use! Just think, if you never seen the dynometer results would you have known the difference?
Just my pennies worth,
Dave.

Personally, I think the cam you have would be great with an "A" head and a tunnel ram or a "not so good" cfm but, higher velocity "C" head or the "C" head combo you have with Nitrous.
I also think your headers might need looking into.
