Power Steering Pumps Empty Power Steering Pumps

Post  dfree383 May 17th 2012, 2:04 am

Stupid Question....... Are the Rack and Pinions on Fox Mustangs compatable with the older power steering pumps from say as 1975 LTD or other non-rack car? Whats the difference if any? Flow Rate? Pressure? ?????

Thanks for any Input.

Sorry, I don't have any idea if the newer (smaller and mostly plastic & aluminum) vs older (bigger and mostly steel) p/s pumps have similar pressure/flow numbers. But if it was me I would go with the newer style pumps (only if the combo will allow it) just because of the reduced weight.

For a long time I hadn't really given much thought about how much p/s pumps had changed over the years until the pump in my 99 Ranger went bad. When I replaced the pump it was an eye opener how much smaller & lighter the new pump was vs the bigger/heavier stuff from the late 60's & early 70's was.

If there isn't any power steering pump pressure/volume data out there anywhere for comparison, I guess you could try to do some testing on your own. Getting dead-head pressure numbers would probably be fairly easy to do with a pressure gage. But testing to get volume numbers might be a real pain.

Pressure and volumn are not compatable between power steering gears and R&P. I called Cardone Remanufacturing and talked to an engineer. Really helpful. He looked up pump specs and rack specs to confirm compatability. I used a Saginaw pump (hambone) with a Saginaw rack (GrandAM). Works great. Just read a artical somewhere with the same question that said pumps for gear boxes would likely not be compatable with R&P. Flow and regulators are available.

I have ran the older pumps with a rack and had no issues even they are supposedly incompatible and this was for ~8 years with no issues, there is a regulator available but it is much easier to buy early 80's pump and brackets off of a-n Fseries.

i tried an old late 60's pump in a fox body and it was not happy at all.when the rpm came up the p/s fluid got hot and came out! on my 40 pickup i left the factory lightning pump on the 5.4 and it works fine with the mustang II rack,so..........hell try it!

Dave I put one of the plastic 90s model pump on my 69 when I put the 351w in it I blew the seal out of the bottom of the gear box thought it was just because it was old gear box. I replaced the gear box and blew the seal out again so I went back to the old style pump box is still leaking alittle. But don't pour like it did with the plastic pump I get around to changing the seal one day.I was told by a old machanic that the older pumps does not have as much pressure and the plactic tank pumps does.
