Re: Buy a Glide or build one????
Ordered the book today and I'll be picking up the trans this weekend. I'll post back when I determine what ratio it is.

Re: Buy a Glide or build one????
I got it. Can't get the input shaft out though. It'll slide out so far then get stuck. Seems Ok though. Everything turns like it should. The input and output shaft have surface rust on them though. I'll have to clean up the output shaft with a Scotchbrite pad. I'll be buying a new turbo spline input shaft anyway.
The book should be in by the end of next week too.
What do I have to change and/or update on this thing? Pump? Clutches? Valve Body? Let me know so I can start buying those parts...

Wiggle the input shaft around a little and give it a big yank. It should come out. It may just have a broken sealing ring that is sticking.
You will need to buy:
input shaft
steel clutch hub
transbrake valve body if you want a transbrake
dual ring servo, not an absolute must, but money well spent. Get one with teflon rings vs rubber or metal rings
complete overhaul kit that will include all the clutches, piston seals, shaft seals, etc. Steve Oldani is good to buy from. He will sell you just what you need and nothing you don't
http://oldanimotorsports.20megsfree.com/custom4.html
new pump gears
universal shift lever/shaft, these have 3 holes for the shift cable and will work with most shifter brands.
9 out of 10 pumps castings are still good if the trans was stock. Follow the book on some pump mods with simple hand tools.
Not required, but I would also buy a deep pan and a locking dipstick.
Re: Buy a Glide or build one????
John if that trans is out of a c10 then it just might be the short or intermediate length one......

Thanks David. I'll pull it apart to look at once I get the book and flip through it for a couple of days.
Coug, You lost me on the length. What's the difference? Just the tailhousing? Does it matter which length one I have?

Re: Buy a Glide or build one????
John,
What Randy was saying was that being a C10, it would probably have the shorter tail shaft. Thats all. Dont buy a GODD Damn thing, until you get Munroes book. And dont bother buying a valve body either. Get the kit and do it yourself. They are easy. You can go with the .500 pro-tree transbrake valve body or the lower one.
On the input, just take clamp a pair of vise-grips on the shaft. And whack the grips with a hammer. It will come. 1:76 will be 12-7/8ths. 1:82 12-5/8ths long.
You will love this Glide stuff. Read the book a couple times or more, or whatever it takes
I wasnt a fan at first at the thought of a GM trans in my car. But it makes sense, especially in a light car with our engines. If the world can use 9" Ford rears in alot of Chevys, then I guess it will make it easier to "ACCEPT" a glide
Keep us posted.

Re: Buy a Glide or build one????
I got it out. It's a 1.76. Shaft is 12 7/8" long. Guess I did alright for $50 bocks, huh?
Book won'y be in until Friday at the latest. I'm out of town all this week anyway. I don't plan to tear into it until the very end. I'll stick in the car for mockup here soon.

Yes you did John!
Most tranny shops say $50bucks is about the going rate. But old stuff is drying up too. You gotta consider that also. Read that book and Git-ER Done!
Regards.

Man after reading through some of that book I might let someone else do it for me. Talk about being uneducated on the transmissions!!!
I still have a way to go before it needs to get built so maybe I'll grasp the concept by then...

John it isn't that complicated... it does go into alot of detail about how and what it does, but it's not that bad...

If ya can build a engine, you can surely do a trans. Just read it about ten times. Youll get it.

Damn Al. Tell me how you really feel.
I don't know you but I feel like I know you. Know what I mean?
I'll pull that pump off of it one day and see what it looks like in there.
