have a 502 gen 5 i built in a jetboat. after 13 hours of 4600 rpm all was well until the next boat ride. after 5 minutes it pushed out the one piece rear seal. Any idea why?

YES ... for some reason the blow-by increased enough to blow out the seal.

as it turns out, the seal was not installed far enough into the bore, i installed it flush like a smallblock chev 1 piece seal. I also used silicone instead of installing it dry. Live and learn i guess.

Using silicone ... if it doesn't sit for a week, it will come out again.

thanx randy, wont use silicone this time. How tough is it to get a new seal in without removing the main cap?

not sure if one is made for your engine, but i have a tool to install one piece seals on sbc motors. kent-moore. looks like a cone shaped hub with a large wing nut. it threads into the back of the crank and tightening the wing nut pushes the seal in.....bobn

i thought i would pull the pan, check bearings and install the seal with the main cap off. Killed two birds with one stone. bearings look like new and the seal slid right in. thanx for the help.
