The other thing that happens when the needles begin to exit the lifter is that the little pieces land on the piston skirts where they stick and ride up and down in the bore. I've seen this twice unfortunatly and the distribution to the nearby pistons is amazingly uniform too.
I'm trying out Isky Easy Rolls Stage 2 in a .904 size this time. One year in so far so good. This is a pump gas 588, .830 lift Comp cam moderate ramps, Rev and XCX lobes.

any bent pushrods? bent valves? on that cly? whats the underside of the rocker look like?

No and no. #1 exhaust. Rocker looked fine.
