460 Issues
Hi there.
I just bought a Ford Torino GT 1970 with a 460 in it. During the drive at home after 20min, the engine made a very noisy sound - I shutted down immediately. I can not desribe the sound... now I dont know exactly what to do (it is my first old muscle car with such kind of engine).
Tomorrow I will drain the oil to see if I will find bigger metal chips etc. Today I removed the valve cover, but nothing noticeable (from my point of view).
Does anybody have some recommendations (manuels, links, remarks, questions etc)? Currently I am disappointed.. spend money for a new car and now it is standing in the garage :-(...I would like have a car with a running engine.
I am looking forward for your feedback.
Best regards
Mestro

Give us something to go on as far as what kind of sound and where it sounded like it came from. Did it start to lose power? Did it shake the car when it made the noise? Is it locked up?etc.

Re: 460 Issues
Hi Barney.
Oil pressure light wasn't on. Other instruments are not in the car (this is already on my to-do-list). Compression hasn't been measured (I am from Germany and I stay here since 4 months-- up to now I haven#t any special tools....).. no leakage.
I drove with ~55mph and from one to the next minute it the sound came up and (when I remeber right) a slightly shaking... after the shut down I tried to restart the engine (we were on the exit lane) the engine shutted down by itself...
I called the pre-owner and he mentioned the sound is coming from the driver side head area...
I know this information are not very helpful (but in this moment I was excited) and generally I am currently to unexperienced ...

Yes he does.. but it seems that he has somewhere high friction... I could hear the "noisy" sound during the start..
But I think, there will be no other option to remove the powertrain out of the car and open the engine?

Re: 460 Issues
the thing is, the car is currently located in a garage of a friend (and we don't have any tools there)... so from my point of view, to remove this engine out of the car seems to be currently "mission impossible". I would like to ship this car to Germany (should be there avaiable beginning of October)...
Ooooooh.... my first experience with such kind of engine..

It could be any number of things, big and small. Where are you located now? Maybe a forum member is close.

Hi there...
no news due to the fact, that none of the tools fit to the f****** oil drain bolt.... does anybody have a suggestions what kind of toola and what brand I can buy in the USA and where (the tools in the home depot don't look so robust)... otherwise I get pissed off every time I leave the garage....

does the rotor turn while you're cranking the engine?

Wal-mart has Stanley tool sets for a decent price. Should be able to get a decent starter set for ~$70 not top end tools but far from junk. They are made by Mac or Snap on which are good quality brands.

If your new detriot Michigan, get ahold of randy Malik or adney brown, one of them should be able to a least diagnose the problem for a minimum cost.

I just drained the oil. no metals parts found (putted 4 magnets into the oil)
what now? remove the rockers arms to check the lifters and pushrods?
did anybody remove the oil pan in a Torino? or is it required to lift the engine?
i am looking forward for feedback

Re: 460 Issues
it could be a broken dowel in the end of the cam, broken timing chain or a sheared distributor gear rollpin.
id make sure the distributor is rotating and report back....

x2, simple check. pull the distributor cap, crank it over and watch if the rotor turns. My car stopped running during a cruise and I figured out everything that happened once I checked that.dirt_worker wrote:it could be a broken dowel in the end of the cam, broken timing chain or a sheared distributor gear rollpin.

Re: 460 Issues
since pushrods don't normally bend "all by themselves" id start looking for what caused yours to bend.....

I would tow it somewhere reputable and pay them to do it.
