Victor intake/gasket?
I just picked up a used victor 460 intake and it looks like the CJ gasket was alot larger than the as cast ports.
I'm ordering gaskets and don't want the wrong ones!
Will the felpro 1230 gasket fit the as cast ports?
If not, how bad will the mismatch be with my doves that are opened to the 1230 gasket?
Thanks
Mike

Mike, those intakes were cast w/small size ports so they could be matched to the builder's head choice (large or small port). You can port match it to your size gasket.

Re: Victor intake/gasket?
Thanks Rick!
I was surfing for info and found that the ports are slightly smaller than the 1230 gasket.
2.16x 1.88 for the intake
2.26x 1.98 for the 1230 gasket

Re: Victor intake/gasket?
If I remember correctly the as cast victor ports are not only smaller but also do not line up with factory small port heads(offset 1/4 to 1/2 inch) and need to be ported to have proper port alignment.

Re: Victor intake/gasket?
Mike when I upgrade my cam Randy M told me to just open the head ports to the cj gaskit on my dove-c heads and leave the intake alone one thing about not messing with the intake ports if you decide to put cj heads on the intake will match them.

Re: Victor intake/gasket?
Well lghtning94 your correct! The ports are raised and moved to the back. The 1230 gasket covers the port in these areas. The front and bottom have lots of aluminum showing inside the gasket.
I need to have the heads freshened this fall. I'll do a cj port match and put the victor on then.

That's too bad Mike, I was looking forward to seeing how much improvement it would make. Next year, I guess.

Re: Victor intake/gasket?
Although the Victor intake has passenger car sized runners, they are on CJ port centers. And so there is a port mis-match when it is fit to passenger car port-sized heads. If you were to place your Felpro 1230 gasket over the Victor's ports you'd see that several of the port runners are offset from the 1230 passenger car gasket. When port matching to D0VE passenger car-sized ports, usually the intake runners on the Victor are left as-is and the port matching is done on the cylinder heads only. This means that you have to bolt a 1230 gasket to the Victor, grind away the gasket which overhangs the Victor's runners, then transfer that gasket/port shape to the D0VE heads. When you do this, one side of the D0VE head's intake runners is widened to accomodate the offset runner wall of the Victor. Do not grind the opposite side of the intake manifold's runners to match the oppsite side of the cylinder head's runners because this willl "bell-mouth" the mating point and reduce port velocity in a naturally aspirated engines.f250mike wrote:I just picked up a used victor 460 intake and it looks like the CJ gasket was alot larger than the as cast ports.

This modification helps mostly in upper rpm engines/gives more power as rpms increase. Frankly, there is more power to found in the plenum of the as-cast Victor in most engine combinations.
Paul
p.s.: If you are not executing a Victor port match, then just use a Felpro 1231 CJ gasket.
Re: Victor intake/gasket?
I personally didn't like the idea of porting the side of the head, or bellmouthing the head and intake to a cj size so I had aluminum welded in and on the port and moved the port to the proper location and size for passenger car ports. It wasn't cheap as I couldn't do it my self but seemed like it should help some. I have had this done to two intakes as well as having one increased to a full cj port.

Re: Victor intake/gasket?
Thanks for the great info Paul!!
Is it worth the effort to install the victor with the 1231 cj gasket with my doves as they are?
The heads have ports to match the felpro 1230.

Mike the 1231 cj gasket is what I ran on mine before I ported my heads to match the cj gaskets I tried the 1230 gasket 1st but I had a vacume leak at the port and changed to the cj gasket and didn't have a vacume leak with the cj gasket I was told that the 1230 might leak vacume but it came in the gasket kit so I tried it but like I was told it leaked

Re: Victor intake/gasket?
What defines "proper" location? The intake runners on the 385 Series passenger car heads are not symmetrical, while the CJ runners are. Therefore, porting the runner entries on the passenger car heads to accomodate the Victor is what makes the passenger car runners more symmetrical or "proper" than they are as cast. Welding up the Victor runners so as to meet the shape of the passenger car heads does the opposite and moves the runners on the intake "backwards" in effect.lghting94 wrote:I personally didn't like the idea of porting the side of the head...so I had aluminum welded in and on the port and moved the port to the proper location and size for passenger car ports.
I haven't modified the Victor in the manner that you did but my instinct is telling me that the power gains in your case may not be as great as leaving the manifold alone and correcting the port runners in the head, although the overall gains in either case still remain dependent on combination.

Re: Victor intake/gasket?
I ran a victor on unmatched but ported d0ves and it ran well. I changed the headers and converter at the same time so I don't have back to back data but it did pick up. This was with a 9.5:1 466 with a mild hyd cam. Also, I have had problems with 2 sets of Felpro intake gaskets blowing out the water ports. I was told to use Mr Gasket cj gaskets and haven't had a problem since.

Are you still running those D0VE heads?
