Re: msd chip
You can test the resistance of all of the chips with a simple volt/ohm meter, just measure the resistance across the pins.
google for all of the resistance values and the coresponding rpm
or buy a adjustable chip for about 55.00. If the chips ohm out okay and you still have a problem, it is definately in the box.
yes they start about 200 before, just use a chip thats 200 rpm higher than you need

On the shifter?????[/quot
why not on a shifter also ? if it shorts thru the shifter? bad ground, its still conected to the box and senses rpm tells it when to shift, shifter has a + /- could be messing with the box, Ive seen stranger things
could be 2 problems

Re: msd chip
What about your tach? I have had tach go bad and cause my truck to act funny right before it shifted, I changed chips, shift lights, added grounds and anything else We could think of till we finally put in a borrowed tach and problem went away.

Re: msd chip
I called msd, the tech guy said a bad chip will do just as I explained, any time the rpm's get to that point it will break up, makes no difference that it is a shift chip, the chip comes into play any time the rpms get to that point, the activator doesn't know how many times the tranny is going to shift, could be a four speed, but when it gets to the point, the bad chip will f-up.
