71 429 cobra jet

i have a 71 429cj in a 71 torino cobra.when i rebuilt the engine i kept it mostly stock used the original pistons,connecting rods,crank,heads.i used a little bigger hydraulic cam with new lifters and valve springs.when i turn the engine over even a half a round i hear clicking it sounds like lifters are leaking down is this normal.

have you pre lubed the engine( primed it) ? , did you set the lifters( rockers correctly?

X2 It will tick without oil upon startup. Better to prime it especially for the sake of the new cam.

I used engine assembly lube and primed the motor with the oil pump and set the rockers by the book and i have double checked them.i rebuilt the engine a couple of years ago and doesnt or never has any clicking when it is running.since then i start it on a regular basis but have not got it on the road yet still waiting for the body work and paint. but if somebody could tell me rocker adjustments i would greatly appreciate it.and i give it a try.thanks

Turn the motor over untill the rocker is closed and the lifter is on the base of the cam.

Tighten the rocker untill their is no slack in the pushrod and the 1/2 turn more (Its call preload)

Repeat 15 more times.

when i adust the preload on rockers should i be able to spin the pushrods or does it matter.if i turn the engine over by hand even a half turn and stop i can here ticking like the lifters are leaking down.any help is appreciated

which studs do you have pos+ stop,or adjustable?
