I was crawlng under the car hooking up my block heaters and happened to give the jam nut on the steering shaft coupler at the rack a twist with my fingers and noticed it was loose.........took it out and found this



before yall freak out I have a stop collar on the shaft at the firewall so even if the set screw fell out the shaft cannot become disconected from the rack........but still

CHECK YOUR SHIT OFTEN!!!!! lol

you must'a used your "good arm" on that. mine has a bolt with safety wire through it.

Was this a Flaming River unit, by chance?

i think the joints were afco's, it will get a grade 8 bolt this go round lol.

Its between my spare converter and camshaft........ I'll make a run to the hardware store tomorrow.

yep, crap on my car is always loosening up from time to time. Header bolts are my repeat offenders.

Funny you post this thread today. I was going through the lash on mine today and a few valvecover bolts were loose so started checking bolts and quite a few needed a little turn here and there. My steering shaft has smooth bore u-joints that are welded but also put a grade 8 bolts through them for extra insurance.

my joints are welded and bolted also, the splined part that hooks to the rack just uses the set screw, this is the reason I made a stop collar at the firewall so just in case this happened.
