950hp to an 1150 Empty 950hp to an 1150

Post  BigBlockRanger September 24th 2012, 11:55 am

Been thinking of bumping up to a Dominator from the 950hp that is on it now. Do you think an 1150 be overkill?

Car weighs 3500 w/ driver (no weight reduction whatsoever) and ran a best of 10.56 @ 127 in really good air with a 1.47 60 foot.

It's a 545 11.5:1 pump gas engine.

TFS streets
Hooker Fox headers

Cam:
INTAKE/EXHAUST
LIFT: 685/685
DUR @.050: 260/270
DUR: 290/305
LOBE CENTER: 108

3.55 gears 4000 converter

I would like for it to run mid/high 10's at my normal track (bad air) and low 10's in good air. There's some more 60 in it I think as it is dragging the passenger rear tire in the wheel well (no ARB or air bag) pretty hard at launch. So maybe a low 1.40 is hiding in there if I work on levelling that out. I think a converter could help as well as this is just a generic ACC 4000 that I do not think is very efficient on the top end. For starters though, I think the motor needs more induction.

Thoughts?

I agree w dave but be aware that they aren't quiet as well mannered on the street

I made the same switch a few yrs ago on my 545 and the 950 had much better drivability in the street.

So... 2 circuit, 3 circuit? Progressive linkage, soft progressive? Lots of options apparently.

For those wanting a dom. carb and good streetabilty I've had great results with the QFX FX-4700.....2 circuit and a P.V. in the primary.

Lem gave me the same QFX-4700 1050cfm and it was spot-on

I run a 1050 dominator on the street with real good results. It's a 8896 3 circuit soft stage linkage. It's an old one and I've upgraded it with Quick Fuel metering plates which was the key to being able to tune her. I also don't have screw in air bleeds so working very carefully with a FAST a/f meter I was able to make it docile enough to idle in traffic, not load up and still have excellent throttle response. My ride is 3500 lb 67 Fairlane, 3;70 gears, 3000 stall. Motor is 502 " with DOVE-C heads and a Isky street roller 280/290 242/252 @.050 .605/.657 @ the valve. You have alot more displacement and cam than I do and with enough patience and bleeds I'll bet you"ll wonder why more people don't use Dominators on the street. She'll need alot of timing @ idle 24-26 deg. so a start retard is a must, the trick was to limit the total 34-36. BTW mine runs 11.60 / 118 on pump gas, through the mufflers, in Drive

My timing is currently locked at 32.

Thanks for the info everyone.

As far as manifolds go, I'm assuming the TFS for 4500's is the way to go?

That's a great choice if you racing, a victor could be a better street manifold.

Here's the biggest question that could be a big factor.

How much taller is the TFS manifold than the Victor?

Nevermind, I found it.

Charlie

That pretty much means I need a Victor if I want to keep my stock hood.

get a 1050 ,3500 is heavy, gears are high, converter is a little tight. not enough compression.

FWIW I run a QFX FX-4700 1050cfm *exclusively* on the street, with no carb trouble what so ever... just needed to be tuned for the entire throttle range (and not just wot from the dyno)

starts fine hot or cold... doesnt need but maybe 2 or 3 mins of warm up time from a cold start (in the summer) never driven the car below 60 degrees.

James you better play with your Timing a little, everyone says 30* to 32* mine liked 36* you have to remember most of these people live at elevation below 1000 ft on a good day we are at 5000

Convert the intake you have to a dominator, the port alignment on the TFS intake to the TFS Streets is excellent don't mess with it.

I have the FRPP Victor, but will probably just convert it. No biggie.
