What's it going in? A lightweight deal I'd do a W with a manual, a heavyweight a BBF C6.

That would depend entirely on THAT "street rod" and the intentions for its use.
Examples: Parking Lot show queen; 200 plus mile "rod runs"; summertime "everyday driver" ... there are a lot of different street rod uses.
Re: Something to ponder.....
Figure something to do a Route 66 / power tour kinda thing with but not a driver to go to work every day in.
Definetly not a trailer queen, but not 100k miles a year either. I'm guessing 5-10k miles a year?
Summer time thing, maybe a 32 or 33 ford?

I am lusting after the Coyote Crate motor for my next dream project. But a 32..... I would maybe think about a cool flat head deal. Reall old school deal Maybe try some modern fuel injection tech on top ... Just for giggles.

Gotta 351C in my '28 Delivery. Took out the FMX and installed a 5 speed outta a F150 last year. The thing absolutely RIPS. Itsa go to work vehicle on the nice days, and it'll make any trip askd of it. Not comfortably, but reliably.

Keep it simple so you don't have to work on it all the time. 302/Auto of your choice...
Plus you can get parts for a 302 a helluva alot easier if your miles away from home than you can a Boss 9 or something else like that...
I'll work on a race car but I'd rather enjoy a street rod...

Re: Something to ponder.....
I would do a new 5.0l or a windsor. The windsor would be cheaper in my mind. The new modular stuff can save big $$ on things like blocks and cranks but they usually need a blower to make any real power. The windsor is small so it fits the street rod theme. It can make big enough power in a stock block for relatively little funds with the abundance of used parts out there. Not to mention available OD transmissions. Also, headers are finally more available for the windsor combo all be it usually 1 5/8. The mod motors are huge and will not usually fit under a street rod hood if that is a concern.
500+ hspr sounds like a lot to some people but it is not. My bucket handles it just fine I just wish I had an OD.
382 Windsor, TFS high ports, Blake the Snake custom Comp hyd roller. 1830#, Runs like a champ with very little maintenance. Just what you want in a street rod.

Just my opinion so, there are bound to be several others.
For that type usage in that weight vehicle i would use a 393 inch 351W with FRPP heads using a "bolt down" valve train, hydraulic roller lifter camshaft & lifters. A Price Motorsport dual quad intake on top for Holley 600 cfm vacuum secondary carbs.
Super reliable, decent economy at cruising speeds, lightweight, cool looking and a Ford in a Ford.
Oh yea, I'd use an AOD trans so you'd have an overdrive, also with the almost bullit-proof FRPP internals.
Re: Something to ponder.....
It ain't on your list, but my choice would be a flathead with an overdrive,in a 39 ford coupe..... Flathead=real hot rod

Re: Something to ponder.....
something with a blower would be cool...... But a single or 2x4 is probably the most economical path.
I wonder what a single turbo 302 would look like in a rod?
You guys with street rods, post some pics.

It would have to be a '50 Merc, my wife's dream car. We saw one at the Pumpkin Run in Owensville, Ohio in 2011 (of course it had a sm block cheby in it) and she about went nuts. The guy asked her if she wanted to sit in it and I swear she creamed her jeans .
Engine would a stroked 351 Cleveland with a supercharger and an AOD, of course .
