What is and why get a vented overflow rather than a non vented? I had just ordered a new one and it came in vented and my old one wasnt.

If your overflow coolant level becomes too high(sometime we forget to check), as coolant temperatures increase this creates pressure. The vent helps the coolant tank to not build pressure.
