97 Crewcab Dually--7.3--Help
I just got a 97 CC Dually,7.3 Power Stroke--- What is best chip to install for fuel milage and towing. Will be towing a 1988 36ft International goose neck. Inside a 80 Fairmont Pro Gas weights 2750 now but will be moving a few 100 off. Automatic over drive. The trns some times bangs kind of hard when going from 3rd to 4th, but find into over drive. Plan to put 4inch exhaust on. Going to be running AMS/OIL 15--40. --Any help to what chip to use is apprecitated -Thanks Fastfrog

My buddy Tony Wildman down in Texas writes some awesome tunes for those trucks.
If your gonna chip it besure to get rid of the cat, replace the flat downpipe with a 3" piece, get a pyro guage..................those would be the minumum supporrting mods with a chip.
Get a bigger tranny cooler, also a good accumulator to firm the shifts (I build them lol)
Here is his site, as it states he has a lot on his mind, has a daughter same age as mine with cancer.
Awesome guy, if you get serious and want something I can contact him and get it done, I'll see him next weekend as a matter of fact.

I have a 97 Powerstroke that I use to tow my 28' tag trailer. It weighs around 10k fully loaded.
The OBS (Old Body Style) 94.5 - 97 Powerstrokes are rather weak (compared to the 99-03's) unless you perform some changes. The biggest thing holding these trucks back are the injectors. They're only 98cc compared to 130cc on the the SuperDuty's. BUT,....you still have to have good tuning, to extract the power out even if you swapped those out.
Tony Wildman is a great tuner for these older trucks. I'm running his chip in my truck and it's awesome.
Your basicly going to have to get air in, exhaust out and have the fuel to feed the motor. But,.....If you don't already have them, you really need a few gauges to monitor the engine while towing a load. Pyrometer, tranny temp, & boost gauge,..... in that order.
Get a good CAI (cold-air-intake) w/ quality filter [not a K&N], 3" down-pipe in conjuntion with a free flowing exhaust, stage 1 injectors, chip, and like Jon (ritcher69) said, a bigger tranny cooler and a good accumulator/valve body. Do this and you'll have a awesome tow rig.
Mine has 293k on it and it tows like a champ.

Gear selection is very important also. imo, I would'nt tow w/anything less than a 4.10 gear. my truck is like yours and I went from a 3.50 to a 4.10 and it was like a diff. truck. And picked up 2.5 mpg. My brother chipped his truck and has had tranny trouble every since. A 150 cc injector and a Tony Wildman chip is a tranny killer for sure lol.
You say it already has a hard 3-4 shift, this could be a broken accumulator spring, o/d return snap ring popped off, or the clutch plates are starting to slip. Either way unless the tranny is fresh and has certain mods the chances are a rebuild will be in your future.
