Starters prefered
I'm looking for opinions on the best starters.
Of coarse 460, 600" c headed 15.5 to 1.
I tried looking at hp n kw but got confused when I converted...
The meziere starter, biggest size, n dollar is a 2.2 kw...
Which is less hp than a powermaster ultra torque, tilton serve duty, and Msd starter? Think they were all 3 hp to 3.4 hp.
Then I also found one from good vibrations racing n said is good for 18 to 1 n is guided by 5 ball bearings...
That sounds good but nervous cuz it's less than 300 bucks.
Just curious wat u guys prefer or seen issues wit. I value ur guys options, mostly cuz everyone speaks from past experiences .
Thanks for your help.

I trashed an expensive 1yr old "namebrand" mini and replaced it w. The factory ford mini these guys are speaking of ( i got mine from NAPA though) and if I didn't tell ya you'd never known the starter was replaced.
spun my 14:1 557 w ease.
Plus it was cheap, local and has a warranty.

Most chain parts stores offer a lifetime warranty, too. Pretty hard to beat that in a racecar application.

There is not a better starter than a Meziere. Especially for a big, high compression motor. Plus it is clock-able and you can get one with an adjustable nose if you need to tighten or open up the pinion clearance.

Re: Starters prefered
I may eventually get one of the Ford mini starters.......but until then I've got a CVR Denso style starter that refuses to die. 10 years old now and been on 3 different cars with 557, 588 and 598 engines all on alky which can be tough on em. Is clockable 360 deg unlike some that have 4-5 sets of adjustment holes. On the dragsters I ran it upside down for more frame clearance.

I, an my friends have been buying starters and alternators from dbelectrical on Ebay. Great price on aquality oem style starter and fast and free shipping! Alot od guys are using these, and at their low price, you don't have alot to lose.

Re: Starters prefered
Starter selection is one of the common controversial topics.
Lots of racers have great results with the Ford part mentioned.
The top of the line Meziere has lots if nice features. I personally have CSR and Tilton starters, both based on the Hitachi motor. They are easily serviced and spin the 16 to 1 618 with ease. In the past I used the CVR Denso units with good results too.
The main point is to make sure the starter is accurately and solidly located.
Relying on the mounting bolts...only to locate the starter (radially) is probably the biggest cause of pinion/ring gear failure.

Been using the DB Electric for two years on a 13.5 to 1 600" engine, so far so good.

At that price you can't go wrong, think I'll buy one just to have a spare in the trailer.

Regardless of which starter you have, if you keep a spare in the trailer.....from that point on, the one on the car will not fail.John Myrick wrote:At that price you can't go wrong, think I'll buy one just to have a spare in the trailer.
That seems to happen with most spare parts that I carry.
Re: Starters prefered
Yep,it will be that $2 part that you or anybody else in the pit does not have and you can't (make) it work no way.

I have ran one of these on my 11.5-1 347 for many years and only after about 4 years of water and mud did it finaly gave up. Well worth the money.GTmustang wrote:I, an my friends have been buying starters and alternators from dbelectrical on Ebay. Great price on aquality oem style starter and fast and free shipping! I switched to the dbelectrical starter when my cvr took a crap. I bought 2 for less than a bill and gave the spare away at the track. Now I have to buy another one. They are strong and tough.
