I'd use the SCJs if you don't have pistons.

Re: Trick flow 290 or super cobra jet
i have otb tfs streets on my 533 with only port matched to 4500 victor intake and 1150 carb. i love the setup, but lots of people seem to choose the scj heads over the tfs streets, though i'm not sure i've ever seen a direct head to head comparison.

Re: Trick flow 290 or super cobra jet
Id be willing to bet the SCJ head will make a little more power than the TFS out of the box. The TFS having a slightly small port may make a little more torque.

Best bang for your buck would be the SCJ's since you don't have pistons yet

Flow numbers (courtesy of charlie evans and scottyj)
TFS Street------------SCJ Heads
.100---67/51---------73/60
.200---144/100------155/106
.300---211/138------222/141
.400---275/169------275/177
.500---325/194------314/191
.600---351/211------317/203
.700---351/223------321/217
obviously flow numbers arent everything, the tfs vs scj topic has always interested me. Wouldnt smaller ports that flowed the same or more usually be the best choice?

Re: Trick flow 290 or super cobra jet
The problem with those flow numbers which are quoted above,,,,,is that the SCJ heads come with a 2.200" intake valve that is not backcut. That's what is represented there as "Out Of The Box". However, with a simple $32-$35 backcut on the intake valves, the SCJ's flow changes dramatically and improves quite a bit. After backcutting the intake valves, the SCJ heads will outflow the TFS Street heads.

Re: Trick flow 290 or super cobra jet

Yes, it's a big improvement, especially at the mid-lift flow numbers, and that's where you need to be focusing on.

Never ever think all performance valves jobs are equal...... Thats why "you get what you pay for" from people that are in the know.

Re: Trick flow 290 or super cobra jet
well if its only $35 i don't see why anybody would go to anybody else than charlie Evans!
i'm not planning on changing heads anytime soon, maybe even ever but if i knew you can get those kinds of gains with the scj heads for so little money invested i definitely would have gone the scj route. i still wonder how much power that translates to in a direct comparison!

I made a 2,500 RPM to 6,500 RPM direct PORTED head to head to head comparison on Mile's dyno with my 434 Engine Masters engine; TFS, SCJ and P-51's
You should do a test with "out of the box" heads and tell us all about it.
Re: Trick flow 290 or super cobra jet
i certainly know why i would rather do business with Charlie Evans than Randy that's for damned sure lol!! he's a man of the people and conducts himself professionally!
