Courtney is the "baby" daughter and kind of a maverick.
John encouraged her to do what SHE really wanted to do without feeling any pressure from anywhere else. NOT to go ahead and do it but, to listen to her inner self and make her OWN decision.

She is over 21 so, in my opinion, he did the right thing by supporting her whether he agreed with her decision or not..
