Pa Boys and the Torino make a pass, or 2
Well as promised since all the tractor pulling is done for the season, we decided to load up the Pa boys and unleash the Torino again after a "slight" converter / carb change to see if we can get our green barge into the 3 digit mph. We hit Quaker City Dragway in Ohio to shake down some quarter mile test and tune runs, with a gamblers race to follow...
Unkie Gdog's First run was slightly reminiscent of is first pass' ever at windy hollow with 60+ feet of smoke leaving the hole with the car in low gear.... Second pass was alot better leaving the bulbs in second gear we managed a 7.15 @ 100.56 in the 1/8 and the stripe was 11.08 @ 123.42 with a not so hot 60 foot, rolling into the throttle as to keep it from spinning the tires....
Unbeknownst to us our pit neighbor informed us we might want to tread lightly with that fast of a car with no cage in it... Us clueless tractor pullers are unaware of what we are doing, so we snuck in one more pass. leaving in second gear again leaving with a little more authority, still not using all of it, and with some slight tire spin, it went 1.66 60ft 7.03 @ 101.58 and 10.94 at 124.31 !!! Well needless to say we didn't get to make the gamblers race as they politely asked us to load her up until we get some safety stuff in it. So all in all we're pretty happy, we desperately need some edumicating on how to set up a suspension though, so we can hook this thing and see what its really capable of!!!
Its definitely going to be hard to keep Unkie Gdog at bay till the next bash!!

Mark,
I am always so nervous that I hardly noticed. As to the track, it was smooth and has a pretty nice shutdown. Obviously, we have to do something. Safety rules are in place for a reason. Making the car go faster is not going to be hard. Mini tub it and put more rubber on the ground will fix the speed part. The roll bar deal has me really thinking. I don't want to hack up a pretty nice car. I am not totally against it as I saw some places that will almost hide it. And it is not like anybody rides in the back seat. I need to do some thinking.
Anyway, Josh has put together a good running ride. Parts and advice from Lem, Phil and Blake. Thanks to all on the board for the help and patience.
If nothing else, I have a new found appreciation for camels.

Gordon

That's why my car hasn't been to the track in 3 years i ran a 11.27 at 122 mph with out a rollbar. If i don't get one in it next year i'll slow it down and run the Renegade 11.50 class at Thompson Ohio. They also have a OLS Class,8.90 Class,9.90 Class,10.50 Class and they're adding the 11.50 class for next year.gdog wrote:Mark,

Mark,
Thompson is just as close to me also. We just went to Quaker because we know the lay of the land there. It is a nice facility.
I haven't been to Thompson since I was a kid. It was cool back in the day because they ran funny cars. You could really cool to feel the thump of those cars from the starting line bridge.
After we address our traction issues I guess it is the place to go.

11.99
By the time a car is capable of running between 11.00 and 11.99 seconds in the quarter-mile, safety requirements are especially important. Up until this point, factory seatbelts are acceptable, but in the 11-second-and-quicker time zone you need a quality safety harness. The minimum requirement is a 3-inch-wide, five-point harness meeting SFI spec 16.1. The 1995 National Hot Rod Association Rulebook outlines the proper way to mount the shoulder harness and belts.
An NHRA-legal rollbar is also required in the category. Recent rule changes have reconfigured what NHRA classifies as a rollbar. The classic four-point bar is no longer acceptable. The new standard is mild-steel tubing of at least .120-inch wall thickness (most chassis companies, like Art Morrison, use .134-inch wall tubing) that includes a forward-running side bar from the main hoop past the drivers shoulder. This bar is only required on the drivers side, but most systems include both sides for a six-point rollbar.
An SFI-approved scattershield is also necessary in this e.t. category. NHRA requires the scattershield to have an SFI aluminum-foil sticker. According to Red Roberts of McLeod Industries, older bellhousings can be certified by sending the scattershield and block plate to the original manufacturer. The company will inspect the housing and if it passes, it will receive an SFI 6-1 certification. Most SFI certifications are good for five years. Contact your manufacturer if youre not sure.
The clutch and flywheel must also be SFI certified. The main consideration in this area is to avoid using a cast-iron flywheel. According to Roberts, sometime in the mid-70s most of the new car companies began using nodular iron flywheels that are much safer. Most, if not all, current high-performance aluminum and steel flywheels are safe when used in conjunction with an approved scattershield, but the rules state that the pressure plate and flywheel need an SFI certification number. Roberts says the best plan is to record all your SFI numbers in a logbook. This makes it easier for the tech inspector and it shows the inspector that you understand the importance of the inspection process. This e.t. level also requires steel valve stems in all wheels, along with arm restraints for open-cockpit cars like roadsters.
10.99
Cars running between 10.00 and 10.99 need all the above-mentioned safety equipment, plus drivers protective clothing, aftermarket axles and an SFI-approved harmonic balancer. The driver needs to have at least a single-layer, SFI-approved jacket such as those sold by companies like Diest, Simpson, RJR and others, as well as long pants and approved drivers gloves.
The aftermarket axle requirement also extends to installing a C-clip eliminator kit in any rearend that uses a C-clip to retain the rear axle, such as the GM 10- and 12-bolts and the Ford 8.8-inch rearends. While the current NHRA axle rule does not include an SFI spec for axles, experienced axle manufacturers such as Summers Brothers, Mark Williams, Strange and others offer axles intended for this kind of abuse.
Harmonic balancers first became a subject of concern on blown cars that placed enormous loads on the balancer driving the supercharger. Now, any car running quicker than 10.99 needs an SFI-approved harmonic balancer to be legal. Companies like Vibratech, TCI, BHJ and others can supply the necessary legal part.
A new NHRA safety rule change for 1995 states that cars running between 10.00 and 10.99 must have a rollcage unless the car has an unaltered firewall, floorpan and body (except for wheeltubs). This means if you have a street car with a stock floorpan and firewall but have tubbed it for bigger tires, all you need is a five-point rollbar until the car runs quicker than 10.00. Of course, a rollcage is perfectly acceptable if you wish to install one

It doesn't take much to get deep into the safety stuff. I will bet most guys can get into the 10's. We did and we are just goofing around.
