What is the catch?
Ok, in National Dragster Dec 13th, there is a full page add for Ohio Crankshaft, a 4340 BBF Crankshaft, 4.600 stroke, for only $595???
I have been looking at billet cranks, 4.500 stroke, for $2K or more, and 4.75 stroke is even $3K or more. So what is the catch, what am I missing?

Re: What is the catch?
damn, they used to be $800.00.... if they are now 595.00 I just might have to snag one!!!!
wonder if it will swing in a stock block

Re: What is the catch?
Every thing has a limit, and I wouldn't trust my good parts on it. Yes it will swing in a stock block.

You have had a failure with a Ohio crank?
says there 4340 cranks are rated to 1500hp... sounds about the same as a scat...
Re: What is the catch?
I was curious. I got a billet Crower crank 4.500 stroke for $1500, that has dyno time on it only, perfect condition. I was pricing billet 4.750 cranks at $3K or more. Then I saw this gem, 4.600 stroke for $595? Is Ohio Crankshaft like eagle or scat? Worse/better? 4340 is 4340, right?
Re: What is the catch?
Good stuff ain't cheap, and cheap stuff ain't good. I'm not gonna beat on them, but I've heard quality is hit and miss. Real good known stuff isn't much more, and is worth something down the road.

Paul, there will be 4.75" forgings available from Callies directly, I'd hold out for one of those. They will be around $2k and able to handle whatever is thrown at them.

Really... last time I checked with Oakley that bad boy was a tick over 3000... what is the diff in the ones your speaking of????
Re: What is the catch?
Schmitty was being kind to Ohio Crankshaft and politically correct in his choice of words. I know a Chevy racer here that has broken 3 Ohio Crankshafts in a row, even with them (O C ) assembling the complete engines. Bottom line, their quality has a bad reputation.
I own a Bryant crank, Crower crank, Scat crank and Performance Crankshaft cranks. Point being I could run an O C crank if I wanted to, but I choose not to.

I have received 3 4.750 callies magnum cranks so far and they look great. Next shipment end of Jan. If interested give me a shout. Price point 1900.00. Real bargain for anyone wanting a 632. Also have a 4.500 on shelf ready to ship for 1850.00. Thanks Phillip

Re: What is the catch?
Do people run 4.75 stroke with a 10.200 deck height? or do you need a taller block?
Re: What is the catch?
The BBC guys have done it for years. That is what the deck height on a tall deck BBC is.

The Chevy guys run the 4-3/4 with a 10.200 deck. The std bbf deck ht. is ~ 10.300".

so true my assembled sbf 438 short block lasted 6 passes took out the block too. the rods were h beam crap seemed like a great price at the time.
2 sleeves/ crank repair/ 2 valves/ new rods and pistons and rings and bearings, not such a deal in hindsight. no help from ohio crank.

Yeah thats what I want to avoid, which is why I got a Crower billet crank 4.500 stroke. But I wanted to build a larger engine than a 598, but I didn't want to spend $3K+ just for a crank.
So, there is a catch, as expected. On a side note my previous engine had an Eagle 4340 4.500 crank and that thing saw 7500+rpm on a regular basis, no issues.
Re: What is the catch?
Never owned an Ohio crank. I know some guys who have...but never heard anybody brag about one.

Philip, that's great, did not know Callies was making a 4.75 in a 4340 !!!
Re: What is the catch?
I for one know there quality is low key. I acquired a 4.50 deal and took it to the crank shop and he has had 5 of these cranks in the Colorado area. 2 of which are fed healthily amounts not NO2 and are of the 4.60 stroke and are 618 inch motors wit h "c" heads running in the 6.90 range (please remember its Colorado 5280 in the air). So far he has not seen any of these cranks fail like we have seen on this forum. but for the money you get what you pay for.
Ace
Any body run any of the new Lunati cranks? I've been told Kasse putting them in some of there (LOWER $) builds

Re: What is the catch?
Well as much $$$$ as we all have tied up in every aspect of our cars, saving a few hundred $$$ on a item that could fail & result in CATASTROPHE.
just don't make sense.
I'll save a few weeks and call them Kentucky boys

Re: What is the catch?
Yeah that was my line of thinking when I got the A460 block vs a factory block. I didn't want to wonder IF it was going to hold together at 1000 hp.
