P51 heads on 530 ci class pulling truck
Just curious if any one is using them, and if they are competitive?

I have them on my 533 and it's a very competitive 6200 lb. Pro Stock truck. Makin' around 850 hp with a mafia intake and a 1050 Dominator. They're out of the box except for titanium retainers and a few thou. shaved off to get it up to 14.6 compression.

There are one or two guys around here running those on 530's... If a460 head is allowed in your class and your starting from scratch I would go that route instead.... When we ran that class here we were in the top 5 most of the time but rarely won... We were using ported scj's though... We dynoed our combo at 840 hp... Some of the A headed deals in our class were between 900-1000 hence the suggestion of going to A-heads if they are allowed. I believe the P51's are somewhere between these two heads..Good luck

Any heads can be used, Just curious if the p51's can keep up with the chevys and A head ford trucks.

I highly doubt that even the best P51 headed deal is going to come close to a good A head deal.

If your starting from scratch... And any head is allowed... I would be looking for a A-style head or better than those even. A properly set up A-headed engine with a good sorted out truck will be hard to beat..

Do you know what your competition has under the hood?

If any head is allowed, you should look into something with shaft rockers. C's properly ported for the smaller cubes, along with a short stroke big bore engine will give you something that will make you smile.

Don't they ban C's a lot in truck pulling?

The Luther's ( MeanStreek ) are the 2013 points Champion in N.E.W. Motorsports in the Super stock class and they have a P-51 heads.
They make and honest 900 H.p. with them and there truck is able to put every bit of it to the ground. The Problem us A-head guys have is where making 1100 + H.p. and getting it to the ground and sticking with DOT tires is hard. One gear the wrong way and your either blowing the tires off the track or you miss the ground speed by Mph or two and your on the back side looking in.

That's kind of what I was thinking, If I made a strong 900 hp it would keep up pretty well, I've watched a lot of pulls and I've seen good hooking 900 hp trucks beat the 1100 plus hp trucks more often than they should.

Re: P51 heads on 530 ci class pulling truck
One of the biggest problems is guys are running 600+ cubic inch engines in the 540 class around here. IMHO I believe an engine from a builder for pullers is where the winning begins. 900hp at the wrong power range and your pissin in the wind. there are 3 chevy trucks that have 600+ and one dodge won the points the last three years. but there is a true 540 79 ford that give them lots of fits making 900hp at 8800 rpms + ....I would call and talk about what your budget is and what your goals are to a few of the builders on here. take a tank to a sword fight
