has this happened to anyone else?
So I'm at the ford fever classic at MIR, I've made 7 passes all in the 10.30 range, all is good. All of a sudden no oil pressure. Fastforward two weeks later and the motor is on the stand and I find I have actually broken my oil pump into two pieces just below the mounting flange. Has this happened to anyone else? the bearings are all shot and there is one spot on the crank throw that hit the pump before it could get out of the way but all in all everything else looks ok. The pump was a melling HV. Also I want to convert this to a 4 bolt main, any suggestions on brand or other advice? thanks in advance!

I have had 10 bbf motors and never had that problem have run the melling Hv in all of them, but i have always used red loctite on the bolts that hold the pump because i felt they were heavy and with the strain they are under with the 25w50 oil i run just felt better doing it. sorry to hear that about yours

It's not an uncommon problem, spend the extra $$$ on a Kaase pump, it won't happen again.

Please tell me why this happens, i have been out of the BBF world for about three years now stepping back in with a BBF on NOS building right now, should i be worried about this pump?

Stress from vibration. Pretty simple. If your building a high hp expensive motor I'd consider a better pump like kaase's or a titan if you want to stick with a in pan wet sump

I agree. While the Melling can be made to withstand the stress of a high horsepower application, the Kaase is a much beefier casting from the get-go. Well worth it in a high dollar build in my opinion.

I have a titan with jeff johnsons pan in a 638 bbf, but i run 532/557 stock block motors and have not had a failure, just wondered if they had some bad metal or a bad bunch of pumps i know i read somewhere that on some of the chevy motors the new select pump was giving up the ghost and costing some serious money

If you compare a "new" Melling pump to one that is ...say 10 years old, you'll see the diference. It looks like their accountants are running the show now.

That will make for a slight loss of oil pressure, and ruin your day as well

this is how my old pump looked when the crank hit it .
i know some one that their pan was too close and after 3 oil pumps he found out that the pan was hitting it
a hammer fixed it

Re: has this happened to anyone else?
The vibration is what causes the Melling pumps to brake. I suspect it's worse on the bigger power engines, but I don't know for sure. I have had a broken one and replaced it with a Kaase oil pump and have been tickled pink ever since. In fact I just ordered another Kaase pump from Lem last week.

Lots of times ,just a bad tire shake will break the CAST pumps. That won't happen to the K pump.

As a matter of fact I did have a bit of tire shake on that pass. Those pictures are exactly what my pump looks like now. So I'll get a Kaase Pump next. Where can I get one? Also, any advice on two bolt conversions?

Call Lem Evans, 1-877-611-2613. He has the Kaase pump. He'd be a good person to ask about the 4-bolt conversion as well.

Re: has this happened to anyone else?
if i install a melling pump in a race engine i weld a brace to it,one thing people forget is the stress on a pump in a rear sump apt. From bolting down the pickup tube ,ive keep this info to myself for years, but what i do is stress relive( heat till red) the pickup tube, then watch it cool, you would be surprize to see what happenes sometimes, just make sure you heat it as your tighting the nut on main cap stud,or the bolt that holds it to a gurtil,or how ever you hold it down,
