Re: Vp M5 methanol
fumes were bad in my car this year during testing. I had 3 1/2 in tail pipes made to turn the exhaust out the sides on the car. I hope that helps. My car was running rich till the last testing the fumes were not as bad then

Re: Vp M5 methanol
i started out running an out of the box QFT carb that was very rich and used about 2 gals per test run as the jetting and tune up got closer to where it should be the fuel consumption was getting less too

Thank you larry for the info i was thinking down the lines of 4 gals a run for me. When you guys do your warm up are you guys running it on stands in gear and then refill the tank and head to the lanes? This is all new want to see the hole pics be for i go down that road. How many runs are you guys seeing befor oil changes what kind of oil are you guys running sorry for so many ?s never to old to learn some thing new:)

Re: Vp M5 methanol
With m5 even though the carb is fatter I use less. Right at a gallon on a 1/8 mile run, 1.5 on 1/4.
I have a 3 gallon cell and have yet to run out, even when I have to build heat in the motor.
I do use a leanout, throw it open at the stripe, use it do get back to the trailer and to the lanes..........makes a difference.
Be sure the car is sealed very well, M5 fumes are very unforgiving............lol.
I paid 310.00 plus tax for a drum here 2 months ago.

Re: Vp M5 methanol
Has lube in it, so add nothing.
I go by water temp gain, not the most accurate but it works for me.
Plugs are tough to read, it dont color much.

Re: Vp M5 methanol
Alky be it plain, M3 or M5 takes a long time to build heat in the engine, I use a heating pad on the oil pan and a heater in the cooling system. I'll plug um in and fire up the generator as soon as we park. After i unload everything and we get near time to race I pull the heaters and drive the car around until it gets good and warm................I like to get the water temp up to 190 or so and let it heat soak while i charge the batt, suite up, get ready to race etc.
I run a carb, my leanout is a ball valve on a hose tied into the spacer under the carb, throw it open to induce a vacuum leak.............less fuel wasted and builds heat much faster than with it closed.
For the record I warm the car with plain alky as its cheaper than M5, on cold days even with the heaters it takes over 2 gallons to get it warm. After its ready I drain the tank and refill with m5, by the time I get to the lanes its already in the system.

what type of set up are you doing? A guy needs to use the plain alky to get it baselined then go to the M5..............M5 is the shit.

well the leanout deal wont work like i have lol. You can always turn the idle mixture screws in, done that before, just takes a second.

Re: Vp M5 methanol
I've run methanol over 10 years now. I ran carburetors,
toilets, and now Enderle mechanical injection. I keep
it on the fat side for consistency. I tune by individual
cyl EGTs and have found the best power and consistency
at 1080-1130*. Spark plugs always look like new and stay
in the motor for years. I drive the car everywhere and
average about 2 1/2 - 3 gal a full circuit running 1/4 mi
drag races. I have a 5 1/2 gal tank and have only run out
of fuel a couple of times returning to the trailer. But thats
usually due to track issues causing multiple warm ups or
burn outs.
I play with the fuel shutoff to lean the motor down to warm
it up quickly. This can bring it up to 170* within 3-4 minutes.
My blocks are filled and I run oil pan diapers so the temp stays
intact pretty well. With the fuel shutoff wide open it usually
stays at about 140*. If someone wants to play burn down
games I can sit forever! I've idled it 20 minutes and used
only 3 gal.
I ALWAYS start (hot or cold) using the gasoline primer. Its
the most consistently easy way to start in any weather.
Gasoline tank is about 1/2 gal and usually lasts all day.
I've tried many many brands of methanol and havent seen
ANY performance or quality difference. I religiously use top lube
and fragrance and only drain the system at the end of the season
and had NO PROBLEMS. I run methanol from a local chemical
supply company that comes with "UN1230" labels on the drums.
Price varies with the seasons. Usually lowest at about $2.00/gal
in June/July. Highest Feb - Apr. Current price for Nov is $2.30/gal.
Be aware that lube and fragrance additives may not be legal in some
classes or events.
Just my experiences for what thay are worth. Sorry for being so lengthy!

Have you tried the m-5 Alky Pinto ? Its supposed to have some kind of nitro based family of additives in it .
The enderle injection is sweet do you run a high speed l/o

Re: Vp M5 methanol
This spring when i made the tranny swap we tested with the car on Q16, went a best of 6.04 at 114 if I remember, in its defense the carb was not tuned, and had a real fat curve in it.
I put the alky carb back on and went to the track the next weekend and it went a 5.80 at 117, air was close.............gain 400 rpm on the converter.
We gained a tenth and 2 mph with the M5 in the 1/8th.
We gained 26 hp and 12 ftlbs with my brothers 306 on the dyno going from plain alky to M5.
My engine with more compression might have ran better on gas, that and with the carb tuned right i'm sure.
Boils down to I'm and alcohol guy, Have been for 10 plus years.............tried to go back to gas and didn't like it. I for one have had good luck with it. The only downside to the M5 is the cost, if a guy runs brackets every weekend double enters and such stick with plain alky. We put 100 passes max on the car a season, so the cost is not applicable, but the gain it yeilds are.
The alky vs gas making more power boils down to combination as well, mine lacks compression so the alky crutches it....and even if it didn't I would prolly still run it lol.
Always broke um in on what fuel it was gonna use, so alky for break in is fine, just find some way to run it a bit lean.

Re: Vp M5 methanol
No I have not tried M5 alky. Ive read their marketing claims
but am very skeptical since the sanction rules specify it be
99.99% pure methanol. Kinda hard to make it different then
anyone else? Very pricey as well. Coogle had the same claims
years ago regarding the nitro. I tried their product and found
no gains. I'd like to see a M5 test with back to back passes
at a track with the same car with a known good tune up. I'll
be happy to test it if they want to send me a drum.
