Things I have noticed on the site lately....
I originally posted this in the "victor look a like manifold " thread...
But I figured it might do better as it's own thread....
NONE of us was born with all the knowledge we have now. I don't care who you are.
Even the guys with 100 years of experience started out from ground ZERO...
We all got it the same way, trial and error or testing, it didn't just "come to us"..
With that said.... Why do we give newbies such a hard time when they ask legit questions ???
Isn't that why they are asking ???
So, instead of beating them up and driving them away from the site, Shouldn't we be helping them ?????
Then , if they don't take that advice, it's on them ...
Next, Those of us that have been in this "hobby" awhile, didn't always start out with the best stuff..
We made due with what we could get our hands on, in order to get whatever project to the track or out on the street..
Then why is it, we knock someone for buying a knockoff, if it's all they can afford to get a car running ?
All I don't wanna hear.. " well if they can't afford it, they should be in this hobby..."
That's BULLScat... ALL of us have been there at one point or the other..
Maybe the guy has plans to upgrade later..
Maybe the car is just a cruiser and NOT a racecar.. He doesn't NEED every last HP.. Just needs the car to go down the road..
Maybe, it a boat , that's just going to ease up and down the river...
My point in all this ..??
GET OFF THAT "If it's not THIS part, it ain't right......If it ain't done MY way, it ain't right" attitude..
There is more then one way to do things, it's all in what someone can do or afford...
If a guy has a part, help him with THAT part.. Don't beat on him by saying "You should sell it and get so and so..."
You might explain why it might not be the best part, But won't it get the job done ??
If a guy is looking TO buy a part.. OK, if there is better.. suggest it to him and then tell him why it's better..
Don't just say .."it's this part or no part..."
I'm off my soapbox now... Carry on, it's seems that's all some of you want to do anyway...

Thanks Mike,
I hardly ever post but seems like this site has much less traffic than the other BBF one; didn't used to be that way.

As those who have met me can attest to....
Much like my Dad, I call it like I see it..
Seems like some of us here have forgotten the days when we were starting out..
Let me also add this...
In the beginning, We wanted to be the "Go To" place for 460 info..
Hard to do that when you're running folks off.
If I see anyone get the above stated attitude in a legit thread.
I WILL delete that post...

When "newbies", (as you say), are willing to listen and not asking any question simply to gain confirmation as to what they have already assumed ... they get lots and LOTS of good help from almost everyone here.
It is when an argument ensues because they want the entire history of why a certain conclusion was freely given about what has shown to work and not work ... they deservedly get shown a hard time.
Personally, when I am asking for something, my "hat is in my hand" and "my ears wide open" and if I happen to find a reason to disagree when I am ASKING about anything, I will not "kill the goose laying the golden egg" but, will continue on my quest untill I find someone who has actually DONE it.
They do seem to want "instant gratification" but, that is usually not gonna happen. AND, calling NAMES is nothing but, childish.
That is MY opinion about the matter.
Re: Things I have noticed on the site lately....
Randy,
As I said, if they ask for advice and then want to argue and not listen.. it's on them.
But, if they ask Intelligent (key word ) questions about why something works better, we should respond accordingly..
As the saying goes... "You can lead a horse to water..............."
My rant was not directed at anyone person in particular.
But just things I have seen building over the past few months...
The Victor look a like thread just brought it out...

I do understand.
Some people have TUNNEL VISION about certain things and refuse to believe or even listen to any of "the rest of the story" as Paul Harvey used to say.
.
BUT, that is what democracy is built upon ... tidbits of information which people believe or not believe and then vote on; (if they actually vote or simply complain afterwards about the outcome). ???????
In the capital marketplace we vote with our dollars.
Re: Things I have noticed on the site lately....
well said QtrWarrior, I too have noticed the abuse given out on this site, I know some people only here what they wanna here (like Randy said) so if they don't take good advice when given then its on them, I'm new to building BBF's thats why I'm on here to learn and boy I've learned a lot and I'm thankfull for those who have helped me along the way.

There are many websights that have many many opinions on how things should be done When newbies get here sometimes they don't have the full details so things need to be sorted out. I asked a question once about a 23° head rule and the first answer I was given was that's a Chevy thing.

Posted this mighty early... Did you sleep well last night?
I agree. I'm still scraping bottom compared to you guys. But it's been fun watching you guys build some sweet rides over the number of years I've been on this site, and the other site, and the other site before that...

I don't know where or when you got into cars, but "back in my day" there was no internet. I learned the basics in high school shop class, and the performance stuff came from magazines, local speed shops, swap meets and friends.
-Magazines were as they are now....writing articles and recommending parts based on advertising dollars. But there was some technical knowledge to be gleaned from them.
-Speed shops weren't interested in debating, and you only learned by listening to what they had to say and following their recommendations. They were happy to tell you the best way to achieve your goals within your budget, and they were also happy to tell you "ain't gonna happen, kid" if your expectations were unrealistic.
-Friends were all to happy to bust your balls and tell you the parts you were talking about were crap. They were also good for trading parts and helping work on your junk.
-Swap meets were where you bought "cheap" parts. Not poorly made/designed crap, but cheap used but not used up parts. As somebody else stated, this seems to be where the knock-off market is competing, and telling somebody they're better off buying a good used part instead is what friends do.
As for not being nice enough to newcomers....c'mon man. I think it's fair to say there aren't many people over 40 who are just getting into this kind of stuff, and the younger generations could use a little hardening up. Nobody was concerned about my "feelings" when I was a kid trying to learn. They had the hard earned knowledge and I was thankful when they chose to share it. Usually though it was more like me asking a question and them saying "no dumbass...that's a bunch of crap, this is what you want to do".

Carl, there's a difference in your friends calling you a dumdass and a guy u have never met on the web. Their is always gonna be a bully or smartass to try too make a newbee look less knowledgeable. ?
Thx Mikey, I agree w/you completely.

John....
You're talking to someone who is up at 4:00am during the week to be to work on time...
I'm laying in bed, wide awake by 6:00am on any given morning.. EXCEPT
after late nights of racing or having a few with friends...
Carl...
I got into cars when I was 12-13 and I'm 55 now... There was no internet..
It was read what I could, Long distance calls to Dad and work on it to find out myself...
It should not matter how old the person is asking the question..
As long as they are listening and not arguing... what's the harm ??
NOW... If they want to call names and argue for no good reason... All bets are off...

Carl, Randy I have noticed allot of the newbies and some of the others come here and ask Questions................ then go to the Crapper and ask it over there also so they get the answer they want......for those people I do never answer if they have the question ask on more than one forum they are not looking for the right answer they are looking for someone to say what they want so let them ESAD...

Re: Things I have noticed on the site lately....
knock off parts, I could care less about them. One reason I'm not the manufacture of the originals.
has be said, we are not born with knowledge, we copy it from are parents and schools. you can call it leaning but its a copy of thoses that came before..
I remember the 80' when Japan was hurting USA made auto's. what Japan did was learn how we made the auto and copyed it but better from the manufacturing to the final product. USA auto companys changed the old way to match the offshore offerings. Whats this got to do with an intake manifold .
Take Edelbrocks attitude, the Victor is good enough. Why shoud we spend time and money in develop a Super Victor. What happen , Trick Flow came out with an intake. wonder how much that took from Edels sales.
they might look at it as no demand for the BBF. Mistake
Back to Japan, first they didn't make qualty top of the line. there is a lot of China made garbage being sold in the world.. Will China ever develop and make quality high performance engine parts? most likely no.
Other country's have done it.
You can't sell something thats never been made, or should I say ever will be. Development should never stop.
