1978 half ton 4x4 460 project
I'm working out the final details on getting this truck (complete and running) and many spare parts (stock 351m & trans, extra trim, grille ect. very little rust original body and paint I need advice on what to look for doing my research about the motor in it. In his words and pics its a freshened up 460 stock internals bigger cam, aluminum 4bbl intake, 750 cfm carb (I forget the name) still running exhaust manifolds and iron heads. I want opinions on where to start with these motors I would like to have a 500+ hp all around truck streetable and preferably the most mpg possible. advice? suggestions? Thanks guys. also how do I add pics from my smart phone? Sorry I'm new here.

Places to start would be to install a new straight up timing set. Ford retarded the cam timing four degrees in 72 to meet emissions standards and killed the power. Headers and dual three inch exhaust with good flowing mufflers to open it up. Find out what the heads are. Regardless to get 500 they will need work. Porting on the exhaust side. And figure out the specs on the cam. Otherwise your shooting in the dark on valve work. Go to ford 460 forum and I think theres a sticky on horsepower levels that can be expected with certain modifications. Good luck with the build.

I'll try to answer a few of your questions.
1. Headers, for a 500hp+ hp motor, you need headers. If this is going to be a toy and not a competition vehicle you could get along ok with 1-7/8" into 3 headers, you might want to talk to Mark at Maddog headers. You can also look at a set of Hooker super comps.
2. Heads; to get into the fives. You will need to work on the heads. You can have someone port and polish the stock iron pieces or look for a set of used aluminum's. Cost wise, it would be cheaper to port the stock iron's imho. Just find someone knowledgeable as simply making the ports bigger isn't enough and can actually hurt performance.
3. Intake; for a street motor I think a dual plane is best, but follow this link for a good read on intakes. https://www.429-460.com/t2627-bbf-intake-shootout?highlight=intake
