Front spool?
Anyone ever run a spool in the front?
'77 F150 sand drag
35" front bfg, 33" rear scooper

Doing the front gears. Thinking of spooling it while apart

Re: Front spool?
Most I know are running lockers, more mud and off road trucks, a spool won't take kindly to uneven ground IMO, but let some sand draggers weigh in.

We been running selectro on Dana 70. It breaks the teeth off the locking ring, like it's not going in. Trying a Detroit locker tonight.

Re: Front spool?
Did some more research.
Uneven track and 75 mph is Bad idea for spool.
Locker is better

Other guys that it went badly for. Doesn't want to steer

Re: Front spool?
if you are really applying the power to the ground and running a spool in the front you better have a chassis that will not twist(impossible IMO) otherwise when your frame torque twist you apply more traction to the front right tire and less to none to the front left and to the right you will go very quickly! I would never put a spool in my mud racer because of this. in low horsepower vehicles that don't twist up the chassis the spool will help.

The Detroit locker lived through the weekend! 2nd Friday and 4th last night in a tuff field of prostock trucks.

Re: Front spool?
The chassis definitely twists. Being able to steer at speed is going to trump traction. Maybe a locker next season

Re: Front spool?
Tried the Lincoln locker in a mud truck, zero steering, Dana power lock for the win

Re: Front spool?
I run factory power steering in my Bronco and other then the pump being hot after a run it workseems very good. I've been thinking about getting a mandrel with a smaller pulley so the pump won't turn so fast when making a run. I seen a lot of guys running hydraulic steering and it works good too.

Re: Front spool?
Most people I have built "MUD" engines for use a "True Track" in the front and a "spool" in the rear; pullers, a "spool" in both.
Re: Front spool?
Unless you run hydraulic steering that can overcome the wheel from getting ripped out of your hands in mud racing, I'd keep it open. The advantage is saving parts if you end up getting sideways and smack a wall. I've got a shelf full of broken front axle shafts from when I ran a spool or locker up front and had that happen. Went back to an open front and haven't broken a front shaft is a couple years. The hydraulic steering guys have the advantage of being able to hold the wheel and turn quicker letting them run the spool and keep the truck under control easier.

Spool vs Open
Finally made some passes on Labor Day. The truck is VERY fast
And the track was flat and long. ( We do unsactioned races on the sand flats, so the track could be 300' or 600') Glad I didn't run the front spool. Control becomes very important at 80 or 90 mph
