C4 no converter
Anyone run a c4/c5 direct drive for drag racing? I'm very curious on this and it seems to be a hidden way to unleash hp and maximize speed once figured out...

Dunno much about it, but I did have a cousin (MoPar guy) who ran a "Clutch-flite" in his E/Altered in the early '70's. I guess you're thinking of a similar deal.

Exactly. Not much info out there but why wouldn't a person do this on a race car? It's instant power and 10 to 15% more

Instant breaking parts especially on a c4 with a big block making decent power. ! Just my two cents

So that's why it was used before they learned how to make more/to much power?

Not at all what I was saying. They make a direct drive unit for a c4 but the small parts in a c4 can handle only so much. With a big block ford your going to break parts . I really don't know which came first the coupler or he torque converter. All I am saying unless you have a dedicated race car and willing to spend the money and time to work on it and sort it out. Then the torque converter is the better route to go.

Re: C4 no converter
with direct drive auto you get the bad of both( manual and auto) trans in one.you get the touchiness of trying to control the clutch slippage off the line to get the rpm's up and the extra horsepower loss of the clutch packs and extra rotating weight of the auto trans. the reason they did it back in the day was because converter technology wasn't very good like it is today.

Re: C4 no converter
There would be no slippage though so once launched it would be no loss of hp

Not if the clutches in the trans are slipping.

Well once set up the gain would be awesome though

Re: C4 no converter
Probably Not, there is a reason those went away along with Vega converters.

Idk I've been looking around an when you see the light cars the shock seems non converter type. That gain is alot when you think about it

Re: C4 no converter
The Buick GN guys used to lock up the converters in 2nd gear on their TH200's. Every little bit helps I guess but, I don't see a C4 behind a High HP BBF going over to well with one. The GN guys with a 231 V6 were always breaking input shafts too.

Re: C4 no converter
It would probably take all custom stuff to hold up. Someone used to make a much bigger shaft input an output for it an change all the inside to stout stuff but I can't remember who... I'll try to look it up tonight

The problem is still the little clutch's between them.

Re: C4 no converter
A C6 input shaft cut down and a bored out stator along with many other mods can help out a C4 quite a bit

I'd be looking at a G-force or other Manual transmission long before I'd try converting an automatic, ask yourself why people don't run that setup any more.
