Powder Coating intake manifolds
I know a guy that has a nice powder coat buisness and I was thinking of having my intake manifold and water pump powder coated in the black wrinkle finish as shown in the picture. Besides looking good do you think it would help keep the intake cooler?

Black is suppose to make them run cooler...try it and see ..at least it'll look cooler

That's a intake manifold ?jones wrote:I know a guy that has a nice powder coat buisness and I was thinking of having my intake manifold and water pump powder coated in the black wrinkle finish as shown in the picture. Besides looking good do you think it would help keep the intake cooler?
Re: Powder Coating intake manifolds
That's a sample picture of the black wrinkle finish he has posted and no, that's a cast aluminum pan. I'm thinking either that wrinkle finish or flat black.

Re: Powder Coating intake manifolds
Powder coating realy doesn't do anything but look good, but thier are some ceramic coating that may help a very very little bit, but in a build like you the cost vs return probably isn't any where close to being worth it.
Now taking and filling the air space in the victor with some cheap expandable foam my net you something but will be ugly as all get out.

Do you think I should make him mask-off the machine surface of the bolt hole locations?

I would, yes. Just because the smallest imperfection will enhance any chance for leaking. I'm having my intake done as well.
On a side note we are going to have 1/2 of an iron head coated so we can run some heating tests. Just curious

theirs no other acceptable way to do it.
I'd honestly save the $$$ and put it towards a dyno day...... Much bigger return and an education in tuning.

Josh,
Unfortunately, I can piss away money just as well as the next man, whether it be on powder coating or whatever. But honestly, on most of my stuff, a $4.00 can of spray paint works wonders Please, do like what Dave said and save your money towards something better spent on your engine.

Re: Powder Coating intake manifolds
The gasket surfaces should get cleaned then taped up real well to keep the powder off of them. The bolt holes can simply get some rolled up paper stuck in them to keep the powder out. You can then trim any off with a razor knife later. The gasket surfaces are what really matter. Sometimes the coater will tape off the bolt bosses but then the washers and bolts do not cover up the bare aluminum.
Personally, I'd buy some rattle can clear if you want it to look good. Mine's powder coated but I bought it like that off of ebay years ago...

Re: Powder Coating intake manifolds
Bruno had some pics of his intake... which I believe was painted, and looked pretty damn good.
I have to admit, I am considering getting some v.c. spacers and having them powder coated to match my new black wrinkle valve covers, but hate to spend the cash, since it also could be spent better elsewhere.

Re: Powder Coating intake manifolds
I am mainly just wondering. Since I posted this he gave me a price and wants $100 just to coat the intake. Which might be a good deal but I can see where that money would be better well spent. I really do want to get my engine dyno'd. I would hope that if I am able to have it dyno'd I might be able to borrow some different parts to try out.
I would really like to swap this engine over to a solid roller since it's going to ran on race gas anyway. When I am able to afford a set of aluminum heads the CR is going to punch past 12:1 Which that might be in another year, who-knows!

Re: Powder Coating intake manifolds
I appreciate it, it would be nice to try some different things out if I get to dyno the engine.

Re: Powder Coating intake manifolds
I had my intake coated with ceramic header coating by Nitro Plate. No dyno info, but the intake is cooler to the touch. Much easier to keep clean as well. Just a damp cloth and wipe it down. $125 + shipping
Re: Powder Coating intake manifolds
Curt, David and others,
I'm not knocking powder coating or chrome. It's just that in the past Jones has operated on a tight budget and I've tried to help him out some with his heads and etc. There's nothing wrong with that either, we're all on a budget of some kind. I'm just thinking that the money could be better spent elsewhere on the fundamentals.

Re: Powder Coating intake manifolds
Charlie is right, I have been working on getting this running for four years and I can all way go back and hit the cosmetic details later. Plus as some one mentioned performance wise my engine is not in the caliber of quality to benifit from such a small detail of performance.
