Putting a basic 460 together. Looking for suggestions or constructive criticism
I've got a 1979 2wd Supercab f-150 that I recently bought. It has a weak 302 now. I plan to swap in a 460 that I have. The 460 has older Speed-Pro H535P pistons, .030" over. They are about .035" down in the hole, so it would seem to be a undecked newer block. I have an Edelbrock performer intake and plan to get a Fitech EFI set-up for it. Trans will be a C-6, factory converter out of a '79 bronco. Will have long tube headers. I have a set of freshened up ported big valve D3 heads I planned to use. From what I read my motor should have around 8.8 or 9.1 to 1 with the flat top H535p pistons and D3 heads. Is that right?
I was looking at getting a Lunati cam. Would the 61601 cam be a good match? I plan to daily drive the truck in the warmer months and tow a small camper regularly, about 4000 pounds. I would like to run on regular gas.

You are on the right track.
We do a regular fuel tow pak crate engine that makes 525 / 425 on regular fuel.
Here is a link to the FB build album referenced. Feel free to utilize it as a guide.

Suggestions:
More exhaust timing on the cam.
Square deck that block .030". I can vouch to the worth of the effort from both a cost and time perspective. Tight quench = torque and detonation resistance...
Static will be about 9.5 to 1 but with your slugs down the hole as they are now regular fuel is really not an option.
Proper distributor set up / timing curve or let the Fitech do the timing.
No heat through the intake unless you live in a really cold climate and drive in the winter.
Factory rockers with good push rods works just fine.
I hope this helps.

Take the short block apart and deck the block to "0" or near "0" deck clearance.
For the application you talk about ... Lunati offers an inexpensive "special purpose" camshaft which I have used for that type usage; although with increased fuel pressure it can also be compatible with a factory fuel injection cylinder head and ECU ... #06169.

Thanks for the replys, I had hoped to hear from both of you. I already have a set of roller rockers that bolt onto factory heads, left over from other builds.
I disassembled to motor today and found the oil pump driveshaft not in the oil pump. I bought the motor in a vehicle from a friend, he thought he would change the distributor, and apparently screwed up the part about getting the driveshaft in place. Motor wasn't run much afterwards, bearings look okay considering what happened, just a little copper in places. So it'll be getting new bearings and rings, might as well deck the block too. Thanks for the input.
