Hello All! From Sunny Southern Cal
I am back into the on-road world, after buying my midlife crisis car(Brides words), a 64 Galaxie XL, with a 460/C6. I drove a 64 Galaxie in High School, and have been wanting one for the last couple dozen years or so. The time was never right, or the car was never right, but now I have one that is built pretty much the way I would, had I the time $$ and patience. I know the numbers aint matching and all that, and I know the motor wasn't running that great when I picked it up, but hey, wrenching is part of the fun, right?
I found your group when I entered the search string 460 oval port heads vs rectangle ports heads. It brought up a few threads, and one of the replies was that Ford never made the rectangle port heads, those where after market. I find that a little odd, because finding an intake gasket set for an oval port head on a sunday is pretty near impossible. But every autozone and oriellys and NAPA had the rectangle intake gaskets on the shelf. I did find one, finally.
I had a little issue of cyl #5&6 not firing. After running down the list of usual suspects, I pulled a valve cover, imagine my surprise! I do think there is something wrong here!- Okay, what the pic was supposed to show was #5&6 intake rockers completely off the valve, and the pushrod down even with the guide. Turns out two lifters had blown out,m but could not find any metal bits or shavings. Cam is fine.
So now, I get to learn all about the Fords, and the 460's. This was a drag car in Vegas before a guy in Santa Barbra rebuilt is to run on the street. I hope to learn a lot here, and maybe one day be able to offer a passing nod to good advice.
Cheers!
John
Edit... I am not allowed to upload or hotlink for awhile yet it seems... sorry about that.

welcome to the site...
First lesson.... We don't speak of Oval Port or Rectangular Port when referring to the 460 in general... That's a BBC thing. LOL
We have CJ ports, SCJ, PI, A460, C460, P51, EX514, D3, DOVE among others...
As stated. Lots of knowledge around here.

Welcome aboard. A stock 460 heads used an oval port. I don't know what your local Oreillys and NAPA were looking up but I bet my $10 they sure as heck were not for a 460 Ford. Even the efi 460's look more round then oval but they are nowhere rectangular.

Thank you for the welcome... Like I said, I am just re-entering the pavement world. For the last MANY years, pavement was just another example of wasteful .gov spending. Jeeps., sand cars, quads and sxs's have been my play machines. I know a whole lot more about ARB vs. Detroit, 31 spline vs. 35 spline and Chromo vs. DOM than Oval Vs. Rectangular. As time goes on, the learning curve may be steep, but that is the fun part!
I finally got the valves adjusted correctly and the engine running sweet last night, but I am still dealing with the effects of my neighbor's 'expertise', cleaning up the engine bay of the oil that was splashed hither and yon. readjusting the carb(why would he ever think to crank down all 4 idle adjusters to 1/4 turn?) I think I am gonna be hard pressed to let anyone else under the hood with a wrench for awhile.
