Installed an early 90s starter on my drag car it runs on with the engine
After an automotive electrical shop screwed up my reliable Tilton starter I went with the popular early to mid 90s replacement for 460 powered trucks .It starts FINE but for a few seconds it runs on with the engine .Is there some wiring issue I have overlooked ? I have an old style solenoid mounted on the shock tower and removed the second small wire I don't think that matters but I did it any way to no avail. On the other forum I saw someone with the same issue but I cant get the 460 forum up .Any help would be appreciated .This is an inexpensive rebuilt unit from my local parts store it fits good and works great just concerned about this run on issue .Thanks and merry Christmas Doug

Did you use any shims on the starter??
Maybe as simple as that.

Check to see if starter/ignition switch is causing the issue by removing the fender mounted starter solenoid's small "trigger" wire that comes from ignition switch(sometimes a 90 degree female for stud terminal) and inserting a test light into terminal's end/stud hole and try to start engine and release key switch. If the light goes out as soon as key switch is released the problem may be a sticking starter mounted solenoid and/or the fender mounted solenoid, if the light stays on for a few milli-seconds or so, the problem could reside within the ignition switch itself. Hope this helps.

If you can not see the pictures the bottom is where the hot wire hooks to the solenoid on the fender leave it hooked up then take the right side cable that went to the the old starter take it and hook to the hot side of the solenoid the end that hooked to old starter hook it to the new starter solenoid hot post the make a smaller wire and hook on the right side of the fender solenoid where you removed the starter wire and run down to the new starter and hook up to the small post on the solenoid that fires the solenoid to start the car

That fixed it
Well I am bringing this one back from the dead ! I got Jasons diagram to download and 69 f100 was spot on with his directions .My car is cranking fine now those mini starters really work great .This one is from a local parts store I believe it was $69 .It fits better than the Tilton I replaced it with .My Tilton was over 25 years old never a problem .The cable stud was stripped although it would still crank my car I wanted to replace the solenoid .So I took it to a reputable starter shop for a rebuild After three tries it still wouldn't work .So now it decorates my junk shelf .Thanks Doug
