Powernation 460 build using stock pistons, conrods and crank making 600hp
Hi there,
sure some of you know this build by Powernation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJmchpZGcfo
I was wondering about the stock pistons, conrods and crank - its surprising that they dont swap these out for 600hp. Other folks suggest the stock pisonts can do no more than 350hp and the conrods can do no more than 450hp.
I am considering doing a build like this - what is your opinion on the stock bottom end making 600hp?
Thanks

Personally I’d never take the risk. The stock crank is fine at that power level but the rods and pistons aren’t up to the task. Just my $.02

What piston and conrod do you suggest to use?

For a budget build Eagle and Scat make some nice connecting rods. As far as pistons that will depend on what "shelf" options are available that fit the cylinder head type and compression ratio youre looking for.

Hm, then I need to get them balanced - unsure if this is easily possible. How do I replace conrods and pistons without rebalancing the entire rotating assembly? Is there a method available here?
Looking at these pistons - any experience with these?

Should be dished pistons for mild boost and standard bore 4.360

Yes, having the rotating assembly balanced would be required. If youre looking for a way to build a cheap boosted BBF the cheap part of that equation usually comes with a very short lifespan. If you want 600 horsepower forget the Boost and build it NA and it will last a long time.

A 460 is not an LS engine, you cant just snatch one out of a junkyard, throw a 75mm turbo on it and make 1000 hp. Well you might be able to make one pull but then

Good Video but did you notice on the LS build they took the stock heads off and they had no stickers on the end of them, then they say we are putting the stock heads back on but now they have stickers on them and look like new heads?

Re: Powernation 460 build using stock pistons, conrods and crank making 600hp
Just had this conversation with a friend about HP levels of the stock stuff. IMO the upgraded pistons are always a good idea. The rods IMO with good rod bolts I would feel comfortable with @ 600 if they were new rods... The problem is the rods were using for these stock rebuilds are at least 40 years old now a days.. That metal WILL weaken over time IMO. A NEW rod, with good bolts IMO would be a great upgrade and for reasonable money. Another big improvement is the knowledge we have now in the tuning capabilities. Aftermarket EFI are becoming more and more affordable and the sky's the limit on the tuning capabilities now.

So what is a good stock rod replacement that will fit right in?

It’s been done with 351w’s....... no reason if one should find a clean one at a Jink yard it couldn’t be done on a stock bottom end and have as much success as the LS guys grenading them after a few runs.

I’m not a gonna say that it couldn’t or shouldn’t be done but I will say that when you get greedy with the boost knob those stock 460 pistons and rods are gonna make nice wall art.
As much as I hate to admit it GM hit one out of the park with the LS platform. Ford has a similar potential with the Godzilla but with the current push for electrification and the Godzilla only being offered in one platform it’s a pipe dream.

What production components were in the Windsor?
