Oil pressure problem on my 598 Empty Oil pressure problem on my 598

Post  chappy89 December 29th 2009, 11:38 am

Ok guys, I need some help here. Quick rundown on my combo...C&C 10.32 RD block, 4.5 LAE Crank, BME Rods, Diamond Pistons. Running a Peterson WetVac external pump, 50% driven off the crank, have a valve cover relief from Peterson (adjustable) with 2 -12 hoses to the vac pump. The engine only makes around 20psi at idle, and barely makes 30 psi when revved up. If you sustain RPM it will actually begin to drop. Have tried adjusting vacuum relief, oil pressure relief screw on the pump is all the way in. Crank clearances are good, as are bearings (just removed and checked last week). Also running Jesel dogbone lifters. I have no oil restrictors in the engine.

Any ideas would be a huge help! Need to get this figured out so we can go testing.

Thanks

Chappy

I don't know about your C&C block but if the restrictors are omitted from the A460 iron block the oil pressure can get real funky .

Like how so? The only restrictors that I have go in the backside of the block on each lifter oil galley. Carroll at C&C recommended I install them, but Jesel said not to. So I need the advice of a Ford engine builder, much like yourself Lem (I understand you are one of the best!). It won't be too much trouble to put them back in. Pull tranny, flexplate, etc. I just need to know this will fix my problem. Can I call you and take up some of your time?

Thanks again

X2. I'm sure we ran the restrictors in our RDI block.

Thanks guys. Talked to Lem. We both think that the restrictors are causing the problem. Will put them in this weekend and retest. Let everyone know what I find.

Chappy, I know this isn't causing your problem but just a recommendation from my experience. I have the same oil pump setup and regulator on my 598 except it's the A460 block. Pressure is set at 65-70 psi and I have the vacuum set at 7-8 inches. Anything above 10-12 inches of vacuum and the oil pressure starts to fluctuate a lot. The pump starts to get in a tug of war with its self. Wink

Trust me, they weren't there. I had them in a bag my machinist gave me. But they're in there now.

I now have around 80-90 psi when the engine fires up. Crazy how a those restrictors make such a huge difference.

Thanks to Lem and Carrol Carter for all their help. I think my oil problems are solved. Now as soon as the fuel pump cable comes back, this thing is going to the track!
