Drill bit sharpener that works and lasts
Hello, what drill bit sharpener brand\model do you use that gets the angles right and sharpening machine lasts more then a couple hundred uses?

Drill doctor sucks in IMO
. I use a bench grinder with a fine stone. I marked the table at the proper angle as a guide. I can get alot of use from a bit and cuts real good. A old boy at the local welding shop taught me along time ago. Patients and go slow is what he told me when resharpening.

i have used a drill doctor for years and it always puts a very good edge on mine.
however, i do use a bench grinder as well. especially for all drills over 0.5" both methods work well for me. youtube has plenty of videos to show good practice for a grinder. the DD was certainly easier to use in the beginning.

My DD 750X just starting to lag in getting good angles, its not the grinding stone. It's only been in use for last to 2 years and I am the only user and only occasional use.
On the bench grinder mine is a 20 year old unit still works for grinding metal, drill bits not the best results because the groove on the rest is way off.
I have a general tools swinging attachment that does pretty good but it will not split the points...
keep the feedback coming, tired here of buying same tool over and over to get what I need of them.

You can use a regular 6 sided nut to get the angles correct ... most drills are 118 degree tip and a nut is 120; close enough.

i think most end up learning how to use a bench grinder. when my drill dr goes out i will not replace it. it works fine for me, but most any drill over 3/8 i will use the grinder. nothing to get out and set up so it is much faster. however i did use the DD early on.
like Randy and others said, some type of jig can be very useful

First of all I see several Problems
#1 Most of you guys buy dollar general bits and Harbor freight bits and think they are good (NOT)
#2 Most of you Guys do not realize drill bits are not something you use Wide Open with your drill.
and Use Penetrant like magic tap 1000% different than WD40 it is for drilling and tapping WD40 is for well I havent figured out what its good for yet
well it is good to spray on your Buddies windshiels so when he sees it and hits the Windshield wipers and cleaner it turn to milk on him windows
#3 Most of you Guys don't buy Good bits I'm talking Good
#4 I have Drill bits 40 years old and use them alot But I have the Knowledge of how fast to run them and I bought Good Quality Bit
#5 you Guys would SHIT if you payed $500. for a set of 12 drill bits bit they drill anything and I mean Anything. I drilled 3 holes in a Flat Bastard file concrete you name it it will drill it.
#6 I do have to sharpen once and a while But I have a Bit and Tool Sharpening Grinder with A $220 dollar Diamond wheel on it to sharpen bits and Mill bits and Lathe tools
so moral of the story is if you buy cheap thats what you get and learn how fast to run your bits, there is a reason most drills are variable speed

Re: Drill bit sharpener that works and lasts
I have a drill doctor but I hate it I use a bench grinder we drill a lot of stainless steel so I have to keep a good edge on them. I like the jobber bits they not the cheapest but not the highest price. I have used the high dollar bits at work along with the jobber but when someone gets a hold of the high dollar it doesn't last. The main thing is keeping the right pressure on the bit and right speed and cutting fluid then the bit will last.

I have drilled holes in Leaf Springs with inexpensive drill bits ... just use really slow speed with plenty of coolant/lubricant.

It's all about speeds and feeds, and plenty of lube...
I've drilled Titanium with high speed steel bits before...

Albert, my question in this post is concerning what drill bit sharpening machine that lasts are my fellow gearheads using, not the source of their drill bits.
