New CNC coming & don't have much room; Need help with shop organization!!
I have a new CNC mill coming and I need to get the shop organized to maximize my limited space. I need some ideas on how to organize things like standard bolts, odd bolts, and all sorts of clips and misc crap. I don't like the cheapo gray bins at Lowe's to put bolts in because they can fall out too easy and they don't handle weight too good. Also, how do you guys organize things in general in your shop? Like all your battery stuff in a box or plastic tote? I have all sorts of stuff that I want out of the way, but organized and easy to find when I do need it.
Thanks in advanced!
I'll post some pics of the shop when I get the hole cleaned out for the new machine.

If you don't need large assortments or mass quantities, just some simple stuff like a file cabinet with boxes, or some kind of divider in them might be the ticket. Pull out the drawer and they are right there, close the drawer and they are out of sight. You can find old file cabinets at garage sales and personal property auctions all of the time for just a few bucks.

I've got several sets of bolt together steel shelving(no sides or back panels) and a BUNCH of ARCO plastic bins(the good ones). I use BLUE bins for FORD, RED bins for CHRYSLER, and YELLOW bins for everything else. Bought the shelves(commercial grade) from a factory supply place I can't remember, and the bins from GRAINGER. Smaller stuff I keep in a motley assortment of brass fitting multi drawer deal I've picked up over the years. IF you're tight on space...I'd suggest wall hanging cabinets as well. HTH.

Haas VM-3 Mold machine with all the bells & whistles. I have two cnc's now, a Mazak VTC-41 and a VTC-200B. The 200B is dedicated to blowers with fixtures I don't remove from it so that means all the other jobs has to be ran on the 41, which doesn't handle 3d surfaces very well due to it's processor being 16 years old. The Haas will take over doing all the 3d stuff while the 200B will continue running blowers. The 41 I will keep for 2d minor stuff.
Thanks for the shop ideas. I'm going shopping today for some stuff.

David, when I worked at Boeing ,they used AKRO-BINS they are strong. they stack or hang from a rack and come in different sizes and colors . they are from akro-mils. Another similar typeis from global . These are industial type not the cheapy home depot type. I am going through my garage 5s ing everything and they work good.

Thats what I was thinking too, but you beat me to it! I think it's an aircraft thing, never had at any other place I worked. Darrin if you continue 5'sing, you never get your car done!QtrWarrior wrote:Darrin Gorham wrote:David, when I worked at Boeing ,they used AKRO-BINS they are strong. they stack or hang from a rack and come in different sizes and colors . they are from akro-mils. I just get tired of going out in the garage and spending 20 minutes looking for bolts, hardware, tools.
