Setting up new shop What shop equipemnt?
Ok it has been awhile since I have been here. I thought I would throw this out to the crowd and see what everyone's idea was.
New shop building complete with electricity, water, heat and a/c. If you had $10,000 to spend on shop equipment what would you buy and in what order? This is for doing your own thing not for commercial use.
My list that I have come up with:
Air compressor with at least 5 HP prefer 7.5
Drill Press
Welding and Plasma cutting equipment
Tubing Bender
Chop Saw or Cold Saw
Now you can fab your own rotisserie, body dolly, roll around A frame hoist. You can also fab blocks to go under tires to lift car or truck high enough to work on with creeper at a good height and not need a 4 post lift.
What have I missed? What would you add or change and when?

How about a solvent tank (parts washer) and a glass beader. It's nice to be able to clean stuff up.

The first thing I purchased(actually before the garage was finished)was a Lift w/swing arms. I use it almost daily. Like Cletus said, when you get a little older you will appreciate it more and more. Next ,a Big compressor is a must. Grinders, lots of misc. tools as you go,refrigerator, sterio to play ur favorite toons,chairs/stools etc.

X2 on the BRIDGEPORT, try to find a used one in good condition. Then, if there is any $ left, a 13/14 X42 lathe and a 20 ton press.
Re: Setting up new shop What shop equipemnt?
Make sure the compressor you get pumps at 19cfm,because if you get a glass beader you will be thankful.Run plenty of air hook ups around the shop. Can never have to many, just like electrical outlets.Oh yea!!!!!!!!!!!!The 3 most important things......
A big tv
A cold refrige
A COOL ASS DANCER POLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Setting up new shop What shop equipemnt?
You need the largest air compresor you can buy! I am working on a deal for a rebuilt 40hp, screw, Quincy air compressor with dryer. It should flow 98-115 cfm @125psi I am tired of using a little 5hp recipicating compressor.
This particular compressor doesn't use a tank, it can sense the line demand and adjust the rpm automatic.
Any way, that's just my suggestion.

A 10,000 lb lift is the first thing I bought. Best money I ever spent. And don't forget the recliner, big screen TV and beer frig .
Re: Setting up new shop What shop equipemnt?
Gotta go with the lift first, It's like a whole new world with one. If I had ten grand to spend I would have one on order now.

I don't know how you guys get anything done (or done right), too much drinking going on. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't make you smarter.

9 or 10 k Lift
7.5 hspr air compressor
Miller 211 or 252 Mig welder with aluminum spool gun
Hypertherm 600 plasma cutter
That is about 9k so you better get that fridge fast because you are just about broke.
Beyond that I would love to have a tig welder, bead blaster, large H press, box and pan brake, metal band saw, drill press. An Oxy/Acy setup can always come in handy.

Electric or gas forklift. Tons of storage space on top of a shop office, and a forklift makes getting heavy stuff up there & back down a piece of cake.

shop
A bath room ,with with shower and a big mud sink. Makes my wife very happy that I no longer come in the hose covered from head to toe inn grease and oil, then use the kitchen sink to was up. The hot water is also useful for parts clean up and will turn a $79 pressure washer into a mean cleaning machine.

Re: Setting up new shop What shop equipemnt?
A good forklift is priceless, and I often overlook how much I use it. A smaller 2500# capacity forklift is relatively cheap, and worth every penny. I have two of them and use them all of the time. They don't take up much room either. I have both of mine on an online auction right now and am going to buy a 5000# one after they sell. Here is a link to them. http://www.bigiron.com/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?bigiron6/category/FORKLIFTS Mine are the two at the bottom, the Cat and Toyota. I'm guessing they will end up somewhere between $1200-$2K.

That is way cheaper then I ever would have imagined for a forklift. That is good to know.
