Re: 1000 hp SCJ
I saw that this morning when I was looking for the trans Mike wants to buy. Maybe Lem and Charlie can chime in... could it be due to a 'happy' dyno? If not, that's pretty darn impressive!!

Re: 1000 hp SCJ
I would think that would be close to a first for a set of SCJ's N/A on (557) that small of a cubic inch. I really think the dyno needs a serious tune up. 850-900 max just my opinion.

Happy dyno...that's what I was wondering? Not trying to rain on his parade at all and if it really did those numbers, that's awesome! But, from all I've seen/read here, it isn't very likely.... just an observation from little ol' me...
Either way, I'm sure it's a great motor.

With 13.5:1 and a single 1050, I'd be a little skeptical about the numbers he's posting..........

Re: 1000 hp SCJ
I wasn't going to say anything but I don't believe it either. I would say 800 to 850 max and that would be an awesome motor.
Re: 1000 hp SCJ
Maybe he meant with nitrous, although the trq numbers would be much higher.
Thats around 1.792hp per cubic inch, seen a lot higher hp/cu numbers out of other types of engines.

Re: 1000 hp SCJ
We had a local engine builder with a dyno, every motor he built made a 1000hp

It may be true and it may not be true however, it looks as though most of you guys are quick to pass judgement on something you have no involvement in and know very little about.
One way or the other, I certainly don't think this deserves any ridicule form the people who seem to be jealous about something they CAN'T do.

well stated. the 1000 hp may well be very close to what is available with the right combo. every dyno is a bit different but is only a tuning tool not the exact rule of thumb.

Re: 1000 hp SCJ
Yes, we certainly need to be nice, and I'm happy his engine is making very good power. I've only ported and flowed 16 sets of FRPP SCJ heads, (and quite a few more than that when it comes to Victor manifolds), so just maybe, I might be getting pretty good at this thing. I looked up his flow numbers tonight, and they're worthy, essentially about the same as my own personal set of SCJ heads. I'd trade heads with him and never bat an eye.
Randy Malik helped me build the Lawyer 533 SCJ headed engine which was 882 Hp on the DTS, so "if" it were a 557, then we'd see 922 Hp. However, as Dave noticed, the compression and the carb. The Lawyer 533 had 14:1 compression and a 1250 Quick Fuel carb, so that would bring it back down a little bit. The DeskTop dyno that is sitting on top of my shoulders says the engine is probably 900-910 Hp, if were an acceleration sweep test on a DTS. We don't know what kind of dyno he was on, the software or anything else, so it's dangerous to compare dyno numbers. Even at 900 Hp, he's still probably making more than maybe 80-85% of the guys out there, so I'm happy for him.
More than anything, and I have said this for 15 years or so, when you go dynoing an engine for the first time, take a good friend with you who has prior dyno experience, and knows how to "thrash" in the dyno cell. Furthermore, it really helps to dyno at a shop who has prior dyno experience with your particular brand/style of engine. I don't care if it's a Buick, or a Ford, or a Mopar. There are too many dyno shops out there, with only big block or small block Chevy experience.

Re: 1000 hp SCJ
No one is saying its not a stout motor, I just find the numbers might be different from the dyno they used. If it had been done there in KY at the one you guys use I'd venture to say its prolly right as your running it on a known dyno.............have something in common.
Hell we could have posted some 600 plus "numbers" with our smallblock...............it aint always about "numbers"
Our biggest gain from the dyno is knowing what we had when we came in and knowing what we left with after it was all said and done.
I too think its the shortblock and carb thats makes the "numbers" he has unrealistic. A 600 inch 15-1 motor with a 1250 carb on Q16.............ok I'd believe that...................

Re: 1000 hp SCJ
awsome motor
eather way
one thing that i have thought about on dyno's
let's say someone takes there motor to a sertain dyno
and it makes 700 hp and they were thinking it should have made more?
so next time they try a differnt dyno and the same motor makes 850hp
witch dyno would they go back to?
numbers are numbers
like a wise man once told me are you raceing the dyno?

Re: 1000 hp SCJ
The dyno I use is very conservative but on race day it my motor will out run the comp. Same thing though my builder tells me stories of guys who have dyno sheets saying thier motors make 800hp and for the combination it is not possible. Bottom line is if you have a guy that knows what he is doing on the dyno you will get more real world perfomance out of your combination being well tuned and set up right despite the numbers
