521 camshaft
well I'm new here, jus joined 5 mins ago.I was told there are a lot of great helpful people here and info.I just got home from my 2nd tour in iraq and I'm finishing my car finally. my shortblock is a d1 block, has a lot of oiling system work, cam bearings journals honed/trued up, align bore in the mains, all the vitals that bennett racing recommended.it is 521 cu in,has diamond forged flat tops @ zero deck height, forged rotating assy, arp studs throughout.have out of the box p51's, vic jr intake, king demon 1150. bennett racing send me these cam numbers and wanted some info and opinions on it..good or bad...I've spent to much money to have the wrong parts so if its junk tell me and give me som advice on the right cam... cam specs 272/281@.50 .749 int/721exh lift on a 108lsa.. cars a 85 foxbody chassis car, full cage cert to 850, pg with brake.neilchance converter I already had would go 4800 on tbrake with a 472.. 430 gears..@ 2856lb with driver..thanks

Re: 521 camshaft
thank u sir for the quick reply, besides the cam, what can u tell me about the p51's? and the rest of my combo so far? I'm fairly new to the 385 engines, ran 472 for 6 passed before I got deployed.all in all I love these engines so far they make awsome power pretty easy.I've always ran the 9.5 deck stroked windsor till the 472,theres just no comparison I don't car how much stroke and cu in the small blocks have.I've tried to spend money in the right places and done a lot of research before I ordered anything.would rather do it right the first time, ill eventually step p to a btter block, but my uncle has ran the same block for 7 years with no probs so I just didn't see the need for it now..any advice or reccomendations for other parts ie valve train.. carb spacer, head gasket etc etc would be appreciated

Re: 521 camshaft
that cam will work good for you.it should be real strong low and mid range but wont go more than prob 6500 rpm, which works good for the stock block.more cam would make more hp on the dyno but also more rpm too.i have about that same shortblock with a460 heads with a 270ish @50 /720ish ultradyne,i like it.

Re: 521 camshaft
Here are some flow numbers comparing the SCJ and P-51 heads as cast.
Intake SCJ P-51
100 104 105
200 166 175
300 215 258
400 285 330
500 321 375
600 337 401
700 346 412
Exhaust
100 98 103
200 126 137
300 158 170
400 186 199
500 210 223
600 224 242
700 234 254
There is more info on them in the Proven builds section under Cylinder head comparisons.
The P's are an excellent head that Jon Kasse developed after the SCJ and was made to be an as cast version of the ported SCJ. I would be very mindfull of the tune of that beast when you decide to hit it with the 200 shot. These heads will make 800hp very easily and adding a 200 shot on top of that can make a mess of the bearings in short order. IMHO wait on the N2O until you have a better block ie. A460 or Eliminator. The cam part is out of my league, Blake, Lem or some of the other more knowlegable guys will be more qualified to answer that.

Re: 521 camshaft
ya that's what john and I talked about, using a set up that wouldn't require turning this thing to outrageous rpms to make power, looking at the low-mid lift flow numbers made more sense to me than peak flow BIG NUMBERS.the car works great, with the old combo it would 60ft low 1.40's all day on motor, but fell off at 330. I'm curious to get some info on these heads and what kind of luck other members have had with them..if I can get this combo to run 600 on motor I want even spray it,anyone think this is possible?

You are gonna blow right on past 600hp easily. As cast these heads in an optimized combo will do over 850 easily. I'm guessing that with that combo you are going to be well into the 700's.

Re: 521 camshaft
mainly going to run this set-up 1/8th mile also..I've had a few people tell me to switch carbs but I've ran demons for a few years and once I figured out the tricks to them I really like them..also what about the pg tranny, had someone else say use a c4 but I seen my uncle destroy several of them with very mild 466 in motors.great site here btw,a lot of people willing to help thanks alot

Re: 521 camshaft
The PG will be a good choice, lots of guys here using them. It will need to be properly set up for the enormous amounts of torque these engines will dish out though. Not really fond of the BG stuff, but if they work for you, by all means use it, but a professionaly set up Holley style dommie can be quite a nice deal too. The Quick Fuel stuff is top notch and highly regarded around here.

Re: 521 camshaft
a good c4 would'nt have any problems but the glide is best IMO.i'm going to a glide from a c4 now.6.0's will be easy w/o spray.get the converter setup rite.

Re: 521 camshaft
ya the glide is a pretty good piece now,it was built by chance in ga.. I ve got so many ford haters around here, all the chebbie guys says theres no way it will ever go 6'0s on motor of course they said similar negative junk about my very mild 472. I have taken my time and matched the parts together so far with a lot of help.it just tears them up that the 10k bbc they have want run 6'0s with a 200 shot.definetly gonna have to tnt the car and have the converter adjusted, luckily my uncle is good friend with steve petty so that helps a lot to,but I've stayed clear of that kind of help a lot because I don't want the chebby boys to say it took a car prepped by a outlaw 10.5 guru to outrun their chebbys.I've looked into the qft's dommies, heard a lot of great stuff about them.I ran a pro-systems prepped 950 on my windsor but it just wouldn't feed the 472,so I sold it and swapped to the king demon, which really woke the old motor up. I'm glad to see everyone hates the procough cough junk around this forum..I want even say that word and ruine my thread or the board

Cometics are the gasket for you if you are planning on the juice, and we like the Danny B drive around here. www.bfevansraceparts.com (Lem Evans) is where the best prices are.
