My first 460 build need help !
I have a "DIVE" block with "D3VE" heads . I know that I have to do some port work and grind down the Thermo humps and plug off the air hole . So far I have a Holley 750 , Edelbrock Performer intake and a Mallory distributor . The distributor has a 3 wire plug so I need to know how that hooks up also . I also have 2 used good cams . One is a Comp cam 292H and a Lunati 230d/.530 in. I believe someone told me to get an early timing chain froma 429 but if there is a modern one please let me know which one . I need to raise the compression to at least 8.5--1 or 9.0 to 1 at the least . I don't mind using good used parts either .
OK now the bad , I am very low on cash so I have to watch the money very closely . I am on ss disability so one crappy check a moth don't go far . Mostly I trade alot
What is the most cost effectine way to increase the compression ? Would squaring the block and shaving it down help or do I need pistions ? I am hoping to get the engine to the 425 to 475 HP area but if i am pushing it let me know . I will be using a C-6 and a 3.73 rear but will more than likely go to a 4.10 rear . It will be in a 1937 Plymouth p/u and will have no finders , running boards , hood or sides . The rear bed will be cut down also . I have to get it through the "Inhanced Inspection" here in Pa. to get it titled for the road . I will be running on the street and hopefully at the drag trake to really have some fun !
This is my first BBF build . I have been building SBF engines and I am way better with them for now .
I hope I can get some good advise on what I will need to do . I am going to try to start this for next winter project . So now I am gathering the parts to use . I need to be able to run on pump gas !
Sorry for all the trping but you will need to know everything and where I am and what I would like .

if your bottom end is in good condition the best option for increasing the compression to 9-9.5 would be finding a set of early small chamber heads, C8, C9, D0 Ect.

If the bottom end is coming apart then you could also run flat top pistons, or maby a 10cc dish. You should be near the 8:1 range just with stockers. New pistons should be forged, no reason for comprimises there.
Good luck!

Use the lunati cam and a 1" 4 hole spacer if room allows.
Properly curve the distributor.
Your D3 castings will be fine with proper port work. See my site for instructions if needed.
KB 137 flat tops are more than adequate for the application as stated.
Use the lunati cam though a dual pattern cam would be much better. Voodoo 227/233 comes to mind here.
With correctly ported small valve castings you can expect 430 to 450 hp. With fully ported large valve castings you would be in the high 400's.
In all but the most demanding applications the D3 heads will work just fine c/r being equal.
Hope this helps...

Is the dis a mallory unilite .Does it have a led in it or is it a mag pick up
witch will have 8 small pieces and and magnet. if it is magnetic you will need
a module or a ignition box .I would just use a tfi module if it is a mag you could
go to the junk yard and get one for almost nothing,

The engine was running good when I pulled it so I hope it will be OK . Will know how it looks when I pull the bottom end apart . Even if it runs good the bearing could still be nasty ! It's better to check now while the engine ids out instead of later when I am standing on it !
As for the piston , If they is any trouble with them I will save up the money for forged ! Better insurance for a little more money !
Thanks for all the information and help !

I was told there is a site that I will have to pay $25 to join and it will show me the porting that needs to be done to the D3 heads I have . I also heard there is a ton more good things on that site also besides the head work . I will be paying for that one . I have spent more on books and such so $25 for all the informations is very well worth the price ! I am not sure if it is your site or who's it is but I do have the email address .
I am not in a big hurry right now to get all theis work done on the 460 . I have another build to finish first , but I want to kave everything and know what I am needing long before I start the build ! There is this great site that I am always looking for good used parts , plus in June the is a huge Ford Show & swap meet at Carsile Events here in Carsile , Pa. I never miss it and there are tons of BBF parts there all the time . I will have my shopping list when I go there for sure !
I will be pulling a spark plug to check and see what style of pistons I have .
Thanks for all the information and help !
