possible 460 build: need suggestions
I posted this on the 460 site last year but have been so busy with the small block car to do anything.
Thinking of building a motor for an OEM type class that runs in the area. It is 1/8 mile only and to be competitive this year it will have to be in the 6.0-6.15 range and next year probably the 5.90 range if I guessed correctly. I was really wanting to do a BBF in a fox body stock suspension mustang.
Here are the rules copied from their website. I deleted the chevy, sb and general stuff for ease of reading.
Purpose:
To establish a class using small (10.5” wide) tires.......
Engine Sizes/Weight Breaks:
Big Block – 416 cubic inches in displacement (cid) minimum and 480 cid maximum, 3500 lbs minimum car and driver weight. Engines larger than 480 cid will not be allowed to compete.
See General Rules - Driveline for specifics
Note - Factory "Big Blocks" must compete at Big Block weight despite the actual displacement. Examples include but are not imited to 396-454 CID "Big Block" Chevrolet, 348-409 CID "W" Chevrolet, 429-460 CID "Big Block" Ford, "FE" Ford, "RB" 413/426W/440 CID Dodge/Chrysler
●OEM Cast Iron passenger car and truck production line V8 blocks only. Blocks must have part numbers or casting numbers visible – no removal, grinding or altering of numbers. Up to three lifter bushings can be installed for repair purposes only. OEM aluminum blocks, LS1, Gen III, and Chevrolet 502 big blocks are not allowed.
●OEM Cast Iron Heads only (See list of approved head castings.) Heads can be ported. Valve angles relative to deck must remain OEM. Stainless steel replacement valves are allowed. 11/32” valve stem diameter minimum. Angle milling is allowed. Welding or epoxy can be used only for repairs and not to enhance performance. Repairs must be approved by rules committee prior to competition. Repairs limited to two (2) per head. Failure to approve could result in disqualification and forfeiture of season points.
Approved Heads:
American Motors Corporation - Any OEM Cast Iron Heads.
Buick – Any OEM Cast Iron Heads except Stage 2.
Cadillac - Any OEM Cast Iron Heads.
Chevrolet, Big Block – OEM “Oval” Port Cast Iron head only. No rectangle port heads, Bow Tie heads or Marine heads allowed.
Chevrolet, Small Block – OEM Cast Iron 23 degree valve angle heads only. No Bow Tie heads allowed.
Ford, Big Block – Any OEM Cast Iron Heads Except - No Cobra Jet, Super Cobra Jet, Boss, Medium Riser, High Riser, Tunnel Port, Hemi, SOHC or Ford Motorsports heads.
Ford, Small Block - Any OEM Cast Iron Heads Except - No Boss, Ford Motorsports or 4 barrel Cleveland heads.
Mopar, Big Block - Any OEM Cast Iron Heads. No “Max Wedge,” “Hemi” or any “Stage” heads.
Mopar, Small Block – Any OEM Cast Iron Heads except "Mopar Performance" or "W"s.
Oldsmobile - Any OEM Cast Iron Heads.
Pontiac – Any OEM Cast Iron “D” port head. No “Round” port heads allowed. No Super Duty, 455 High Output, Ram Air IV or Ram Air V heads allowed
●Pushrods cannot be offset and must remain in the stock location.

●Single four barrel cast (iron or aluminum) intake manifold only. Porting and polishing is allowed but no welding or epoxy. No sheetmetal or fabricated manifolds. Spacers allowed.
●CARBURETION: Single four barrel carburetor. Limits per engine size:
BIG BLOCK- Any OEM carburetor or similar to Holley 850 CFM carburetor. Holley: Maximum venturi diameter: 1.5625”. Must be a 4150 series Holley; no Dominators, sleeved King Demons or Predator carburetors allowed.
OEM Example: If competing with a Chevrolet engine then the OEM carburetor can be the Quadra Jet (Q Jet) or Rochester 4GC.

●29” tall maximum x 10.5” wide maximum slicks only. Mini tubs are allowed. Tire size as determined/annotated by manufacturer on tire. No “W” tires.
Power Adder:
●Only one power adder will be allowed - Cold Fusion kit number CFN1508 only. System to be installed per manufacturer's instruction. No modifications are allowed to nitrous solenoid provided in kit.
●Only one nitrous solenoid is allowed to supply nitrous to engine. Maximum Nitrous jet orifice size of .082" inside diameter.
●Nitrous purge systems allowed. Exiting nitrous must be vented outside engine compartment and away from openings leading to engine compartment. Mounting purge system near scoop openings not allowed.
●One nitrous bottle up to 15 lb capacity only. Nitrous bottle must be mounted inside the trunk/bed – other locations not allowed.
●Bottle heaters are allowed. Heating nitrous bottle with open flame while in staging lanes will result in disqualification (and maybe death).
●Other power adders are not allowed.

Re: possible 460 build: need suggestions
This sounds like a fun class....
PI Heads (Heavily Modified of course), Victor 4150 Intake, Stroked 429 Steel Shaft, 6.800 BBC Rods, 4 Bolt Caps on a DOVE Block, as much compression as you can get, Custom FT Cam.......
Wonder if they are slick enough to know an A460 Block, it does have a ford part number.......and is OEM made by Ford

Re: possible 460 build: need suggestions
. . it does sound cool, well except for limiting everyone to a Cold Fusion Nitrous system . I would say based on the details of the rules they would notice the A460 block, maybe not, but I'm not sure it's worth the risk of having to change blocks later.

Re: possible 460 build: need suggestions
The organizers of the class are engine builders (of course Chebby guys), so they know parts. I keep hearing PI heads would be the way to go.
The best car in the class will be in the 5.90's this year with a sbc (406 vortec truck heads). It is one of my best friends car and I say it make around 660 hp on the dyno. He has yet to even put the biggest allowed pills in yet but I don't know if that piss ant kit will even support a 200 shot. It says it can but the nitrous solenoids are smaller than my purge. WTF!!

Looks like this may be one time the bbf is going to fair very well............ I bet they forgot about the PI heads.
Max port and angle mill the stew out of them and then a big dome.............
4.5 bore x 3.75 steel stroked 429 truck crank = 477
I think it would be a good power maker.

Re: possible 460 build: need suggestions
with me in my stang years ago i went 6 teens with a dove head trw 466 flat tappet motor
spraying 125 for a couple seconds .(it had a push button) and i ran out of convertor .I think
a 477 like what is described above would make 660 easy although i am not a engine guy.
