430 Gears Worked Great
Changed gears from 488 to 430 and it picked the car up tenth and half. Best run prior at Prescott was 6.31. Went back to back 6.18's last night. I normally run a tenth quicker at Centerville, sounds like I might have finally got those elusive 6.0's.
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice about this gear change...Blake, Lem, Rick, Jeff. I appreciate it guys.

That's the single biggest mistake I see people with big block fords make, is over gear the car..........

Re: 430 Gears Worked Great
That is a huge improvement. I have 4.88's in mine right now. I planned on trying some 4.30's this year, but I never got around to it. That may be the motivation I need. Congrats!knrclark wrote:Changed gears from 488 to 430 and it picked the car up tenth and half. Best run prior at Prescott was 6.31. Went back to back 6.18's last night. Re: 430 Gears Worked Great
dont hurt to twist it if thats what it wants. Honestly the diff in a 93" and a 100" rollout was a wash. I think the taller tire works a bit better, but the W's have like 3 runs on them.........first pass it blew them off......1.39 60' and went 5.80 @ 120.11............

What do you mean? Great little track and good people. However, if you go on playdays or T&T's the track is not always prepped good. Race day is good though.

Re: 430 Gears Worked Great
Glad it worked for ya Kenny. I'm a firm believer in a 4.30 in a BBF. I will be changing out my 4.56 for a 30 or a 11. Posted Lenny about a converter tonight

I wish I had pictures of peoples' expressions over the years when they ask what gear I run...and I tell them 4.10's.knrclark wrote:Changed gears from 488 to 430 and it picked the car up tenth and half. Usually a chebby guy running a 4.88 that asks...I always smile and tell them "you don't need gear when you have muscle..."
That always pisses 'em off...lol.
Sounds like it was pretty consistant with that gear as well.

If you really want to see their jaws drop tell them you have a 3.XX gear in your sbf powered stang when they have a 4.30-4.88 gear in their bb car. and............you just went 1.20 sixty foot to their 1.32 60'.

Re: 430 Gears Worked Great
I think Duffy said the turbo gears were like in the 3.20-3.50 range lol.
I might stick my 4.30's and go testing again after this index race coming up.....just for the hell of it.

Re: 430 Gears Worked Great
Jon I think with the added torque the m-5 gives I think it should be faster, but thats just my oppinion... I think you have enough torque to pull them....

Re: 430 Gears Worked Great
wow! that sucks..I just removed my 4.30's 2 years ago(sbf) and went with 3.70's. stock 460, 850 holley, stealth and a comp 268 cam,and 150 shot.went 11.70 spraying 2nd gear only. have to see what the 521 will do when it goes back in.

Coug you can't just look at a citation like this and "think" just because I have more torque I can run faster with a higher gear. You have got to think about what more torque will do to the converter and what a higher gear will do to the converter. They will both have the same effect make it looser.
The engine will run faster operating confined in its "highest average horsepower rpm " all the way down the track. It does not matter which side outside of this window its on it will go slower , it will either bog or stop building rpm. It will go faster with the correct converter and the lowest gear possible to keep it in its rpm range.
The amount of explosions in the cylinders (rpm) are what propels the car the more you make the faster it will go.
