mounting the pick-up tube to the main cap.
Hi guys, I have the Idt ultra block and it was assembled with grade 8 bolts on the 4 bolt main caps. And as you will see in the pics below that the mounting tab is placed on the main cap and the the bolt is then torqued down on top of the tab and cap. In stock motors there is normally a stud that torques the main cap and then a mini stud that is built onto it that you then put the pick up tube on.
So my question is, will this be o.k? I was told I may have a torque issue with running the bolt through both the tab and cap. thx.

"We" always cut the pickup mounting tab and put it on top of the bolt head where it belongs. While I think Moroso has some good pans, I use a custom pan/pickup most of the time. Considering the extra labor to jack with the pickup to get it like it should be the custom deal aint really much more money. Plus the 'good' stuff is 3/4" i.d. , has a thicker flange at the pump and the flanges are spec'd to cover the plug that retains the relief spring [they can pop out].

Use the correct type production bolt or an extended stud.

My A460 came w/one stud w/extended bolt to mount the PU tube.

Like everyone else has already said... use the correct bolt or the extended stud. It will also make it easier when you need to remove just the pickup tube for inspection purposes and such.

Re: mounting the pick-up tube to the main cap.
Just one other option. I have an A460 block now and use the supplied stud, but for years I ran a stock block with Blue Thunder billet main caps. One of the caps was drilled/tapped for a short 3/8" grade 8 bolt. Worked great and never a problem. It was still in place when the crank broke and snapped the tube in half just behind the brace.

Thx to all that replied I think I'll get a longer stud and double nut it. Maybe a stud from a stud girdle set up will work.
