302 question Empty 302 question

Post  curiousgeorge May 16th 2010, 9:50 pm

I have an 86gt vert with a 302, had to remove the intake and valve covers today to fix an oil leak. When I pulled the intake the runners were carboned up pretty good so I'm going to clean all that up. My question is how to get it out of the headit only goes about 1\2" into the head I was thinking carb cleaner and a scotchbrite pad with a shop vac sucking everything out. Anybody have any other ideas? And any cheap upgrades I should do now?
Thanks

Cleaning out the carbon will help a lot, also replace the valve guide seals and springs while you're in there if the budget allows.

I hadn't planed on going that far but I'll have to check into it, saving money for the interior right now. Gonna start polishing on the intake tonite.

If they are carboned up that bad, maybe better to pull them and clean them right.

I don't think it's bad enough to have to pull them, It's just a light film that goes about 1/2" into the head and from there to the valve it's good. The lower intake is a little worse and the upper needs some tlc too. If I go very far I've got a 429 sitting in the corner. Twisted Evil But for now it's just gonna be a driver.

Keep the nozzle of your shop vac as close as possible to the cutter while you're chompin on the carbon.
