glide issue
Thought the planetaries in the trans had given up the ghost this previous weekend and upon inspection found the following problems. Seems as if the carrier housing was making contact with the ring gear and trying to weld themselves together. The wedding band on the input shaft was also toast as you can see in the last pic. Any ideas as to what would cause this.

Re: glide issue
what does the inside of the reverse piston look like? How much end play did it have? where all of the thrust washers in the right places?

Re: glide issue
it sounds like the rear roller bearing was left out cuz that is the only way it could get that far back to rub the reverse hub..... or someone changed something and took out to much to let it ride back...
lets ask this question is the sealed roller bearing still on the output shaft on the back of the planetary?

Re: glide issue
The rear case thrust bearing was/is still in the correct place. End play was right @ .010 -.011 when last checked . I'll have to get to the reverse piston this evening and check it out. What would I look for on it? Could I have missed getting the ring gear engaged into all the reverse clutches causing it to rub against the planetary carrier? That thought just crossed my mind

Re: glide issue
The reverse drum shell it has a big thick flat thrust retainer ring what does it look like? it is the ring that holds the rear clutches in...what does the trust face on it look like?
Have you checked the Oil PSI during operation?
Looks like something is making the high gear drum and planatary being pushed back and rubbing the rear drum shell, either that or someone didn't get the reverse shell all the way in and hung it on a reverse steel..
how many reverse clutches do you have in this trans?
how much clearance between clutches?
are you sure you have a 5/16 min hole in the rear of the case for the Brake to vent fluid?
did you make any pump mods?

Re: glide issue
The thrust face on the reverse clutch ring looks normal( Like it always has).
Have never checked the operating pressure. Tha trans has a JW ultra pump in it.
6 reverse clutches. Don't remember their clearence. It was within spec upon last checking.
The brake vent hole is at least 5/16ths.
I'm going to get is reassembled and check all the clearences again and make sure they are o.k. When I do I'll check operating pressures.
"someone didn't get the reverse shell all the way in and hung it on a reverse steel.." someone could be me!

Randy, I was just speculating! Everything went back together smoothly. reverse clutch pack @ .105, high gear pack @ .080, total endplay around .013. I'll get it fired this eve and check pressures.
Thanks!

Re: glide issue
high, low, reverse and t-brake pressure all come in between 220-225 @ around 2000 rpm. I think that is good, but the problem still exist. All was fine until after a couple test passes and the trans heated up. Pressures read the same afterwards. I think I'm going to inspect/disassemble it with the use of a sledge hammer while its still attached to the engine!

What is the trans doing? Pressure is right where it needs to be.

Re: glide issue
Are you running a needle type pump thrust washer? End play is fine unless your using a stock type thrust washer, in which case it's a little tight.

Re: glide issue
The planetary ring gear was rubbing hard on the planetary gear housing: enough so that a lot of heat was being created causing the them to want to stick together. Still don't know 4 sure what was causing it. I did find out saturday that the ring gear that came with the plenetary set was cut @ a different pitch than the planetrey gears and sun gear. The trans was always a little noisier after it was replaced last season.
The pump bearing is a needle thrust bearing. I hauled it to a "professional" saturday morning and we dissasembled it and checked everything over. He is going to check the case over real well and change a few things up 4 us. I missed 3 races this weekend because of it.
