Cam bearing help!!! Empty Cam bearing help!!!

Post  torkair July 16th 2010, 11:42 am

I got the old stock cam out of my 400 last night and found that the #1 cam bearing is all chewed up. I don't feel comfortable just letting my new cam run on a trashed bearing so I need to replace it. I understand the basic principle of replacing the press-fit bearing but would like some real world experience as backup on this so any help is appreciated!

The cleavland blocks use a diff size bearing for each journal. If your using a bar to install them you usually intsall the front one from the back to keep the bar centered.

Do you know what caused the bearing to get chewed?

From what I understand chewing bearings are the 335 series "go to" move, lol. When I pulled the heads there were fragments of the valve guide seals stuck in the tops of the oil passages so my best guess is oil starvation, sadly. The whole bottom end will be coming apart for new bearings, rings, and a couple passes with a berry ball hone.

IF you are replacing JUST the front bearing with an "in the car" cam change rebuild, then just destroy the old one to get it out and install the new one using a thick, flat piece of steel, (4" x 4" or so), and a hammer. Be sure it goes in straight.

I'll sell you ONE bearing if you need it.

gonna get a full ring and bearing set, then take it down to the machine shop to have them clean the block and install the set of bearings.

That's probably the smart thing to do.
