Emmissions!
Different cylinder head, lower compression.

Put a straight up timing chain in it 1968 - 1970 timing chain. If using the factory dish pistons the c9ve, c8ve, d0ve heads will get your compression up.

One thing too look out for is compression. You don't want it too high running pump gas but this should be okay, I don't know about running low grade gas with the small cc D0VE's. I wouldn't take the chance, maybe try and find some bigger chamber D0VE heads and put a new timing chain in it.-JMHOtiger wrote:Put a straight up timing chain in it 1968 - 1970 timing chain. Re: 1970-1973
is there a better head to use as far as stock goes?? I'm planning on using 91-94 octane fuel regardless. heres my plan tell me what u think, 460 with whichever heads are best with P&P, Comp cam good from 500-5000 rpm....i will get the # shortly, wieland dual plane intake, 750 cfm 4 brl Holley. and long tube headers to 3"collectors, 2.5 cat back with high flows and cherry bombs with full msd ignition and electric fuel pump...what u think i need or change also going for the manual, i know the first gear is low however i currently have 4.10 with trac lock so that should offset it. any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Different method for measuring horsepower was used starting in '72. That, along with the other info given, is where the difference comes from.osmossis wrote:why is a lincon with a 460 in 70-72 365 hp, and a 73, 225? just purchased a 73 motors an was wondering why the 100 hp difference?

What is your power or ET goal here? Might want to step up to an 850 cfm carb as I don't think the 750 will quite cut it.

Stock mid '70s short block and stock D0VE heads will get ya somewhere around 9.1-9.4 compression. Need to match the comp to the cam. Sounds like ya got a pretty small cam planned. Might not like more than the actual stock ratio of 7.8 or so (rated at 8.5). 750 is fine with that small of a cam. Got the cam specs?osmossis wrote:is there a better head to use as far as stock goes?? Re: 1970-1973
my goal is 350-400 hp and 450 or more torque but id like my power band as low as possible no more them 5000 if that can be achived. i got a heavy car so the more torque to get it going the better for me is this obtainable? its mainly for the street or occasional strip.

That should be a breeze with d0ve heads, a good cam, intake, and carb. I'd be supprised if you didn't land yourself in the 500 hp range TBH.

Product of the "1973 Oil Crisis". "In 1973 Middles-eastern OPEC nations stopped exports to the US and other western nations. They meant to punish the western nations that supported Israel, their foe, in the Yom Kippur War, but they also realized the strong influence that they had on the world through oil. One of the many results of the embargo was higher oil prices all throughout the western world, particularly in America".
