Scrapping a building Empty Scrapping a building

Looking at scrapping a building. Heavy fire damage. It was a auto repair
shop. Not sure on exact dimensions but you can fit four cars end to end
with room to walk between from front to back. Then three cars like that
wide. The building is much longer but this is the amount of space that
is going to come down.

It has steel siding, three aluminum studded dividing walls. Steel beam frame with a steel roof.

My big concern is getting the steel roofing off without walking on it.
Its burnt through in spots. Maybe I can get a sawzall blade in between
the roofing and the steel support beams?

I want to do this safely and efficiently. Ill be getting a scissor lift and a decent size forklift.

Use a backhoe to knock everything down and load into dumpsters for disposal.

You can rent them from Equipment places, figure about $800-$1200 for a week and you may get then to throw in the delivery and pick-up.

Room is at a premium and have to be careful not to damage the unit next
door. There is a undamaged common wall between the auto shop and the
place next door (I think they make gutters).

I kind of wish I could go in with a excavator with a grapple and go to town.

My plan as of now...

Clean out the inside completely. Bunch of burnt insulation and a few 2x4 walls that are burnt up.

Remove all copper wiring inside. (Im sure it will be gone otherwise)

Remove siding, and roofing.

Then start removing the steel cross pieces that run right angles to the
main girders. Thus leaving the two main girders for last.

With two forklifts evenly spaced out on the roof beam unbolt said beam
from the uprights, lower to ground. Repeat for final roof beam. Each of
these have to be 50' long and 12-16" tall. Hipped in the middle.

Then for the uprights...using a forklift to support the weight unbolt from footing, then lower to ground.

Im thinking all the structural members are bolted together and not welded.

Equipment I think it will take...
Rough terrain scissor lift. 25' reach.
36' 6000 lb shooting boom forklift
21' 6000 lb straight mast 4wd forklift (just for working in tandem with the other forklift to get the beams down. Or just two of these loading/lowering duties.

Dumpster for non scrapyard stuff (already there)

There is a honest $1500 worth of steel there. Then about another $250 of copper wire.

If you have the time and means, do it. Figure out how big it is and compare a new-build price in comparison to what you think it will cost you dismantle it. Around here guys are building 30x40 pole barns for 10,500.
I picked up a 25x36 Quonset hut for free last year. I cut my sheets loose with a sawzall. But mine being corugated made it easier, since the nails were on the high side, so I just choped the nails easily enough. I have a line on some ten inch I-beam im working on getting right now. Gonna extend her 5'
high.

Good luck with it. A diamond in the rough Very Happy Wink
