Ford diesels
So my truck search has turned to just used trucks. As far as looking online I have looked at Ford power Strokes and Dodge Cummins. The Cummins used are pretty slim pickings around here.
Should I avoid the 6.0 all together? I know they had issues but with head studs and the bracket that holds the goofy valve thing in the HPOP and not beat the hell out of it I should be ok right?
As far as the 7.3s when your looking at one with 200,000 miles on the motor is it approaching the end of its life?

Re: Ford diesels
My 7.3 just turned 210,000 and still doesn't use any oil ,even when towing. I hope it'll run another 200,000 .I really like it ,but wuth fuel prices ,I'm not sure I wouldn't replace it with a gas burner.Everytime there is a repair on a diesel ,you can expect a $1000 repair bill at least.Good luck!!

Re: Ford diesels
How much towing do you intend to do??? How heavy?
As far a life of the engine, it has alot more to due with type of use and maintenance , rather than just milage.

Don't know about the 6.0 but we have 2 7.3s one a 2000 with 276,000 on it and a 2002 with 236,000 on it and they still run great and don't use any oil.We have a 2008 with the 6.4 but it has not been that good been to the shop many times and it only has 58,000 on it. these miles are road miles pulling Pace Trailer on them.

Re: Ford diesels
That truck KY posted sounds like a good deal. I have 329,000 on my 2001 7.3 and it runs fine. My dad has 340,000 on his 2000 7.3 and it runs fine too. I bought mine with 228,000 on it and have had a few small problems but it's stuff I fixed myself, except for changing 2 injectors. I let the shop do that simply because I didn't have the time. My trans lasted until 298,000. But it snapped the input shaft. We upgraded it a little while we were in there.
The 6.0s to me are a crap shoot! I know guys with some and they have had ZERO problems with them. And then I know guys like Bruno that have nothing but problems. My 2008 6.4 ain't much better either. It's hade constant problems with the DPF since 49,000 miles. It now has 94,000 on it. I don't like the engine or the problems, but the truck itself is nice. It's quiet, smooth and clean. It's everything my old 7.3 isn't, minus the engine...
Go for a 7.3, you'll be happy you did.

Re: Ford diesels
Keep in mind the diesels have like twice the life span of a gas engine, so 200,000 isn't close to the end. I have seen gas engines go 470,000 miles without any repairs but valve seals and run like new and start right up. The new 6.7 powerstroke is sweet!

Re: Ford diesels
know of at least 3 7.3's with over 800k..........trucks are a pile of crap though.
have seen a couple 6.0's over 300k..........not original motors.
one 6.4 with nearly 200k with the original powerplant...........it should be put in a museum.............
for all the 6.0's that have never had a problem..............they all have the same issues and will break sooner or later.it cant be helped.......would rather all the breakdowns occur under warranty like Nick's..he only has like 7 failures left........

Re: Ford diesels
I looked high and low for a F250 w/Powerstroke, and preferred the 2001 model. I asked a lot of people I knew about the engines other than the 7.3. The preference was the 7.3 model, but the year model may only offer a "run down" truck! I lucked out, found a very nice truck w/80k miles , one owner and like new! The 2001 7.3 model of the Powerstroke continues to amaze me of it's towing ability, as well the trucks ability to safely tow a 28' enclosed trailer loaded with my cargo!
I have a '82 F150 w/460 power. It pulls nicely although at the half-ton rating it's not up to the challenge of "safe towing", especially a 28' enclosed trailer. I think a nice 3/4 ton or 1 ton rated platform w/460 power could do a very nice job of all but extreme towing. Another item to add to your package (IMO), 4 wheel disc brakes, those are a must!
I like the 3/4 ton chassis, the 1 ton chassis is nice too if you don't mind a "big truck"!
Dave.

Five days a week Im pulling 3000 lbs. I know thats nothing but its a lot for my little Ranger. There are scrap metal jobs I take on that I would like to be able to haul a bit more. Also want to be able to pull a tractor or a backhoe around.

7.3 IDI turbo FTW.
i had 400k on mine, pulled better than a non chipped 7.3PSD. only thing replaced was the injector hats and lines.

Re: Ford diesels
I can only post about what I personally have, but my daily driver (personal) is a '97 CC PSD F250, currently have 144K on it and best truck I have ever owned. I just pulled my 44ft Pace gooseneck to MO and back, 10.6mpg there and back with 2 BAD in the rear, I was very pleased with how it went. The only things I have replaced so far are the batteries, a vacuum pump, cam position sensor and the belt tensioner pulley, and I have put just about 65K on it since I bought it.
My other daily driver is a '95 Ford school bus with PSD, 187K on the clock there. Still goes down the road great and gets driven 110 miles a day, more with field trips and such. I figure if a power stroke can make it in a bus, it will survive my driving for quite a while.

Re: Ford diesels
I bought my 2006 SD used over 2 years ago, and have done nothing to it, but that is about to end. It's missing when it's cold and down on power warm so I expect the ficm or a couple of injectors are at fault. It's starting to lose coolant, so I expect the egr cooler is giving up. I absolutely love that truck, and that's why I'm going to tear into it this fall and spend a week and several thousand dollars doing head studs, oil and egr coolers, stc fitting, turbo cleanout, coolant filter, guages, and anything else it needs or is going to need. It's a shame us Ford guys have to do this stuff just to make the engine comparable to a duramax or cummins, but the truck it's sitting in is why I'll do it. Hell, just not having to pull that abortionate shift lever into gear on the Chev makes it worth while.
